The Dream
A poem about change
“You’ve changed,” she said. “Why do you say that?” He asked. “I don’t know. You just seem different.”
“In what way?” “You’re more patient and kind. You seem to be at peace.” “That’s because I am,” he responded.
“What is your secret?” She asked. “Small steps: start and end each day with a prayer.” “A prayer?” She asked.
“Yes… In the morning I bend my knees and ask for help. And at night I say ‘Thank You” before I turn out the light.” “Oh, that seems simple enough,” she said.
“It is simple, but it’s not easy. Staying the course is hard.” He replied. “Oh, how so?” She asked.
“Last night I had a dream. A mysterious ranger dropped a case Of ice-cold beer in a parking lot near an overlook.”
“He wanted visitors to enjoy themselves And, since there was no concession stand, It was his way of providing refreshment.”
“Of course, I grabbed one and popped the top. It tasted so good. I knew it was wrong for me; Would only lead to problems. But I couldn’t resist.
“I awoke in a sweat. So glad it was just a dream.” “Oh, I see. You still have those ‘using’ dreams?” She asked. “Yes, I guess they never go away,” he replied.
“I’m told they happen to remind us That we are never safe; That we can’t let our guard down, not for a minute.”
“I’m glad to hear it was only a dream,” she said. “Me, too,” he responded. “But it did give me a scare. It would be sad to start over after all these years.”
This poem was inspired by the April Poem-A-Day challenge of Writer’s Digest. You can read more about that here:
There’s a saying in the Bible: If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you do not slip.
Embracing change is like walking on ice: take small steps and keep your balance.
Spring is a time of change and a time to celebrate change. We all look forward to shedding the cold, gray cloak of winter and seeing the bright, colorful promise of warmer days.
Last night we had a huge thunderstorm and the grass has turned almost instantly green. Yesterday the temperature here reached 87, a record, and one to celebrate. Spring has sprung in the north country.
I pray your day will be warm and sunny and bright, if not on the outside, at least on the inside.
