Curriculum Selection in Home Education
The Dreaded Decision-Making Process
This isn’t marriage, people. You’re free to change your mind if you don’t like it.
Most of us attended school in one form another. And schools, being in the business of education, make a really big deal of which curriculum they force onto, I mean choose for, their students. Curriculum selection is made out to be the be-all and end-all of whether students will go on to be successful in adulthood. Well that and their official scores.
Fact is, curriculum is only one of many tools that can be used to encourage, support, and facilitate our children’s learning. One. Of many.
For young children, life’s experiences, time spend outdoors playing and exploring nature, being read to, cuddles, singing, quiet time, and whatever your local library has available is all you/they need. Engage in their world, include them in yours. It is all learning.
But curriculum!
I know. It is difficult to get past the belief that learning cannot happen without curriculum. So here is my recommendation to home educating families dying to purchase curriculum:
Search up curriculum created by home educators for home educating families.
Most of them have some kind of a try before you buy opportunity. Most of them are some kind of a PDF formatted study guide rather than a hardbound textbook that costs a fortune to ship.
