The Delicious Eating Spots that Filled my Belly and Heart in the City of Buenos Aires
From pizzas, empanadas, and pastries to pasta and rice and beans
As a cosmopolitan city, Buenos Aires has a wide range of culinary offerings — most (if not all) delicious.
During my nine months in the city, I noted my favorite eating spots, and I’m sharing them in this story with you.
If you visit Argentina, I’d say you cannot leave the country without first trying local meat, pasta, pizza, empanadas, and pastries.
- La Cabrera is an Argentinian asado staple. Since the restaurant is from a renowned chef, eating at this restaurant is pricey. Yet, on Thursdays Happy hours, food and drinks are available at a discount!
- Chori is a small restaurant that specializes in choripanes [chorizo sandwiches]. My Argentinian friends disapproved of eating choripanes from a restaurant. Yet, after taking them to Chori, they loved it.
- Cucina Paradiso is my favorite go-to place for pasta. El Correo is a close second. Quotidiano, to me, is overrated (still good, though).
- El Cuartito y Los Maestros have the best pizza, according to my taste buds. If you ask a local Argentinian, they may or not agree with me. Gladfully, there are a lot of pizzerias in town for all to choose from.
- Andiamo and Tomasso —have the best vegan pizza. These two made me wonder if I was actually eating vegan cheese.
- Empanadas, like pizza, are another highly debated topic. Yet, after eating Rincón Norteño, no other empanadas exist for me. Once you taste them, you’ll never be the same.
- As for pastries, I found the best bakeries to be Suevia and Lo de José. There was also a 24/7 bakery in Palermo by Plaza Italia.
Whenever I grew homesick, I gravitated towards homemade-ish Caribbean meals.
I often ate Sabor Caribeño or Vegan Teque. The first restaurant (though in a not-so-good area according to local friends) was Dominican, and the closest I got to Puerto Rican food while in Buenos Aires.
Another thing I enjoyed the most while abroad was ice cream. And chocolates.
My favorite places with vegan ice cream are Rapanui, Cremolatti, and Daniel Helados (in no specific order); whereas my favorite chocolates are from Bonafide and Rapanui. (Sorry, Mamuschka fans — I wasn’t sold.)
As for brunch, I explored little places.
Yet, my favorites are Le Moulin de la Fleur and Million for dining experiences, and La Panera Rosa and Pertutti for a quick grab-and-go. MÖOI, which offers a wide range of vegan options, is another favorite.
Other restaurants I really enjoyed — despite not frequenting — are Korean BBQ, La Causa Nikkei, Fabric Sushi, Voraz, and Gontran Cherrier.
Last, I had the best cafe, snacks, and meriendas at cafes that offered almond milk and a variety of delicious pastries and cakes.
These cafes are Santal, Crisol, Café del Medio, and Loving Hut Cafe.
Other cafes close to my heart are Vivero Mario Caffé (for its ambiance as a cafe and plant nursery), and Café Martínez. (I also bought Starbucks because it was convenient, but I urge you to support local businesses.)
What are your favorite eating spots in Argentina?
I always enjoy tasteful recommendations from other food lovers!
