SHORT FORM FICTION
The Days
LESSONS IN LOVE (PART 1)
I smeared the reddest lipstick I could find across my lips. This was to be my thirtieth birthday portrait, a gift from my parents.
‘What’s your secret?’ asked the photographer. ‘Talk about your best days.’
My secret? Wow, caught out there. Wasn’t expecting that. He, of course, wouldn’t know about the other days.
So, best day? Was it one day in my childhood when my parents finally said I could have horse-riding lessons?
Was it one day, when at fourteen years old, the boy I worshipped from afar noticed me?
Was it the day we got engaged? Married? Had our first child? Our second?
I’d had so many ‘best’ days.
Then, my love was lost in a motor accident.
But, I was asked. And thought only of the best days.
That’s my secret.
