NO FRUITY FLIGHT FOR FROTHING FEMALE
The Day Pineapples Caused A Hawaiian Airport Uproar

I wanted to show my appreciation for Jennifer Dunne’s Feb. 3 Daily Cuppa article, “How to Spot Swingers: Peek at Their Pineapples.”
I was amused and inspired by this sweet treat of creative writing. (I’m not just saying that because I read her blog before lunch, either.)
Furthermore, if there was a “Headline of the Year Contest,” she’d be an odds-on favorite.
This fruity feature rekindled a memory for me from 30 years prior.
Yes, the recollection involved pineapples. Lots of pineapples!
I had just completed my first Hawaiian vacation. In the Honolulu Airport, I was waiting for my return flight back to reality.
Before I could check in, I heard a woman shouting at the next ticket window. She owned a large cardboard crate resting at her feet.
Two different airline employees couldn’t reason with woman. She insisted that these fresh pineapples deserved to be included with her luggage.
Only pineapples passing USDA inspection are allowed on flights. She needed to board and didn’t have time to get her fruit approved. Claiming that the crate contained edible souvenirs for friends and family didn’t matter.
The fear was that an invasive species of insect could stow away and wreak agricultural havoc on the mainland.
When told she’d have to leave her produce behind to make her flight, the pineapple lady was livid.
“Maybe I’ll just sit down and eat the whole box myself right now!” she warned.
My flight was boarding. I didn’t have time to stay and watch the showdown.
Alas, there was no Youtube or TikTok then. Her threat might not have been as dramatic as a hot dog-eating contest, but I would have watched.
