How To Spot Swingers
Peek at their pineapples

Pineapples have symbolized hospitality since at least the 1400s, when Christopher Columbus introduced the fruit to Europe. Later, returning sea captains and sailors placed pineapples outside their homes to indicate they were receiving callers.
Pineapples were rare and hard to get. Aristocrats displayed them as dinner centerpieces, slicing them open for dessert. This was a sign of both their wealth and generosity to guests.
Displayed with the crown on the bottom, however, the pineapple is a symbol of an entirely different type of hospitality.
Legend has it that couples who are active in the “swinging” lifestyle use this symbol to identify their homes and welcome others who are interested in joining them.
We were considering getting open-work pineapple light fixtures to replace the carriage lights at our gate. I’ll make very sure they’re installed correctly!
