The Curious Case of the Fancy Scones

How to Create the Joy of Anticipation

Photo by the author: Trista Signe Ainsworth. The fancy scones that we had for breakfast.

Well, said Pooh, what I like best, and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn’t know what it was called.

― A. A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Breakfast this morning was the culmination of a much-anticipated treat. My son and I had decided we would enjoy some fancy scones. It is Friday, and we felt like celebrating this week. On my 100-day journey exploring abundance, this story is all about the overflow of anticipation and how it creates joy.

I have a little secret. I am obsessed with afternoon tea. Every single morning, I watch travel videos of afternoon tea services in London. I have now become an expert at all of the speciality teas available.

By watching these videos and having fun learning about the different tea offerings, I am creating joyful anticipation of my travels to London. I feel the abundance in doing this because I am activating the feeling of visiting these places and allowing the experience to come into my day.

Just yesterday, I wondered if a famous tea room in London had published their scone recipe. It was one I wanted to try. That would be our special breakfast for today. Sure enough, as soon as I searched for it, it popped up!

It was a recipe that took some weighing of ingredients, patience, and a bit of time. Everything was in grams, so I got out my scale. Also, I had to search for a measuring device that had centimeters on it. The only thing I could find was the level in our garage!

After making the dough and rolling it out, I put it in the fridge to rest overnight. This morning I rose early to cut out the scones and brush them with egg wash twice. Then, into the oven, they went.

All through the process, I smiled. I was excited to share these delights with my son. Making the scones was even more fun than eating them. Although they were delicious!

We ate them with cream and raspberry jam. I showed my son how to twist off the top of the scone, the proper way, as I had seen in a tea etiquette video. We were both exclaiming how soft, fluffy, and yummy these scones were. They were worth the work and the wait.

Here’s the recipe that I used. It is so delicious and I hope that you will enjoy these soon:

My prayer and my intention for you is to activate anticipation. Plan something special. Explore places you have never visited through watching videos. See how you smile through the planning of an activity.
