The Cult Mentality Erupting with the Pandemic

Photo by Artem Maltsev on Unsplash

…”and of all these things the Spirit has made, makes always his universe. But it is himself that he makes in it, himself that is the creator and the energy of creation and the cause and the method and the result of the working, the mechanist and the machine, the music and the musician, the poet and the poem, supermind, mind, and life and matter, the soul and Nature.” — Sri Aurobindo

Conspiracy theories predicting the end of the world: obsolete.

New Age blissful thinking heralding the “great awakening”: also obsolete.

Two sides of the same coin, these two extreme beliefs cancel each other out.

Both views are trying to control the uncontrollable.

Predict the unpredictable.

Know the unknowable.

Conspiracy theories create a parasitic energy. They hook us in with fear and the fear feeds on itself. And it needs to keep us hooked to stay alive. So the fear, panic and anxiety create a loop that keeps feeding on itself. It keeps us trapped.

On the other extreme, believing that everything is all rainbows and unicorns ignores reality. It refuses to see suffering. When we are blinded by the light, we are unable to see the shadows. The shadows in us, and in the world around us.

It’s all hypnotic. It becomes cult speak.

Beliefs that are ungrounded, disconnected from reality, and in denial lack discernment.

Discernment is key.

The savior complex is strong now, people believing they are specially chosen to save the world, that now is their time to save others. We all want to feel important and in control. But the ‘me vs. them’ mentality only further separates and divides us.

These beliefs are ego games. It’s a story and an attachment that the ego creates. The ego will always try to control, grasp for answers. The ego tells us we are special. The ego has many traps.

Ever wonder, where do your thoughts come from? Do you own your mind?

When there is no psychological foundation for understanding the nature of the mind, we become victims to ourselves. We bypass the psychological and emotional work we need to do.

This work is Jung’s shadow work.

Shadow work is not posting a sad selfie and looking for external validation. Shadow work is taking a deep dive into the dark aspects of yourself. Seeing them. Feeling them. Shining the light on them.

So we have two ends of extreme thinking: fear and panic vs. denial and disconnection.

Extreme thinking will always have an opposite. They need each other to survive.

The age of the guru is over. No one can tell you what to do, how to live. Spirituality gets out of balance when it’s monetized, commoditized, corrupted and sold. We need to stop looking to others for answers, for validation.

Go within. Within YOU.

Surrendering into the unknown is all we can do.

How to find balance? Your heart.

Where is the middle ground? Your heart.

When in balance, the heart resonates and vibrates with love.

When we go within, we find this middle ground. We get grounded.

We admit we do not know and enter into the unknown.

No one knows the future because we are in the process of creating it. This very moment. Right now.

When we surrender to the unknown, we accept what is happening. We die a little death.

A shamanic death.

This is alchemy. This is the process of transmuting darkness into light, suffering into healing.

It is scary and liberating all at once. There is nothing to hang onto!

A surrender into the unknown is a free-fall. It is terrifyingly beautiful and beautifully terrifying.

It becomes both things and all things, all at once.

We need to face it, we have to go into the darkness. We need to see it for what it is, see ourselves for who we are.

This is how we make the unconscious conscious. This is how we become conscious. This is how we discover who we really are.

And what it means to be human.

We are all in this together. There are no winners and no losers here. We are all suffering. Individually, collectively.

We collectively grieve those who are sick or have died. We collectively see the small acts of kindness, the smiles and friendship of our neighbors.

We collectively celebrate the massive acts of kindness of our health care providers. Of all those doing essential work, and all those on the front lines sacrificing themselves to help others.

This is love. This is our greatest power.

Love is the love of creation.

Creation is love and love is creation.

Love will not simply cure the current pandemic. But love includes compassion. Empathy. Connection and working with others. Helping each other out, sharing ideas and resources.

And when this happens, we raise our consciousness.

It’s a process that cannot, will not, be stopped.

Find your own truth.

Shadow work is the deepest, darkest work we can do… and the most liberating.
