The Cost of Being a Hero

A superhero drabble

This is sort of a response to Grim Flandango’s drabble a day prompts, word 1:

“Costs? Costume repairs for one. Each kilometer run in spandex is like a dozen in slacks.”

Captain Future nods.

“Then, there’s the base. Can’t be just anywhere. Rent, repairs…. High-tech defences means paying contractors. Some shit is always gonna bust.”

Pauses; sips his water.

“Damn, these studio lights, dude… Where was I? Yeah… insurance is an asshole, too. Battles with supervillains aren’t that bad. Well… sometimes they’re pretty bad… but covering every smashed house or killed kid would put me outta business.”

A murmuring in the audience.

“I mean, you can hardly blame me for taking the occasional mob contract.”

I used the word, ‘kilometer’, mistakenly thinking it was one of Grim’s prompts (it was actually ‘kilogram’, oops!). This was also a response to A Different Side of Fiction, idea #4:

“We hear a lot about superpowers, but less about how superheroes pay the bills and balance the books. Write a short interview with a superhero where this is discussed”.
