The Circus Outside My Window

Come see the amazing acrobats!

Ever since I was a young whippersnapper I have spent a great deal of time staring out the window. Gosh I love windows! When I was a kid in school I spent an inordinate amount of time staring out the windows and daydreaming. I dreaded classrooms without windows.

I currently live in a second-floor apartment and one of the first things I did after moving in was to take down the mini-blinds from all the windows. In previous homes I have immediately taken down curtains and draperies. I can’t stand anything covering up a window. Why the hell even have a window if you are just going to cover it up?

When sitting at my desk in my office I can look out the window and see a lot of old, tall trees. I also see bits of rooftops of single-story homes between those trees. I can also look up into the sky and watch the clouds as they slowly swim by. And I also have a clear view of a tall wooden telephone pole.

There are power lines at the top of this pole that connect to other poles to the right and left that are out of view from this window. A little lower down on the pole there is a single cable wire that also connects to poles to the right and left that are out of the picture.

So many times I have glanced out this window to see a squirrel walking or running along this cable wire. Squirrels are the tight-rope walkers of the neighborhood. They are the star acrobats. And they have absolutely no fear of heights.

Well, this morning I looked out the window and saw two squirrels on this cable wire. They were facing each other and they were ferociously fighting with each other. They were moving back and forth along the wire like swordsmen in a vicious battle.

Then they lunged at each other and suddenly one of the squirrels was pushed off the cable and fell all the way to the ground! I have witnessed many a high-wire squirrel battle before but I can’t recall ever seeing a squirrel falling to the ground.

To my utter amazement, the squirrel that fell did not appear to be even remotely injured. It merely shook itself off then ran to a nearby tree and quickly climbed up to the top branches.

Then the squirrel that was still up on the high-wire cable leapt off the cable towards the tree. It caught hold of a thin branch which swayed down from the weight of the squirrel. It then scampered along the thin branch towards a thicker branch. The two squirrels then proceeded to chase each other with dizzying speed all over the tree.

Eventually they scampered down from the tree and ran towards the telephone pole. Within seconds they were back up on the cable wire resuming their high-wire duel. After a few minutes their duel moved down the cable wire out of sight.

You do not have to wait until the circus comes to town and you don’t have to buy tickets to that circus in order to watch amazing high-wire acrobatics. You don’t have to go to the movie theater to see a Dwayne Johnson action movie in order to see exciting action and fighting. You don’t have to watch wrestling on TV in order to see two contestants maul each other.

All you have to do is look out the window. But you’ll miss the exciting circus if your blinds are closed or your window is covered with curtains.
