The Christmas Markets Of Copenhagen

My Christmas adventure to a Scandinavian country

Christmas markets are a must-see in many European countries during the festive period. Whether it’s Cologne or Berlin in Germany to Salzburg or Vienna in Austria, get a taste of Hungary by visiting Budapest or enjoy the buzz of Basel by venturing to Switzerland. Wherever you fancy going the most important thing is that you MUST get this adventure ticked off your bucket list. In the next 4 minutes, I’m going to quickly tell you about mine.

My adventure took me to Copenhagen in Denmark and what a wonderful five days it turned out to be. We ventured out on our first night and found vibrant market stalls lit up with beautiful Christmas lights.

As we entered you could hear the sound of Christmas songs playing in the background accompanied by the warmth of chatter in the cold night air. Our first stop was to find a warm drink and whilst there’s plenty on offer such as hot chocolate, coffee, and mulled wine the one you must try is the traditional Danish Glogg which is a hot and sweet mulled wine. Æbleskiver is a traditional Danish treat you must try as well when visiting the Christmas markets. It’s pancake puffs dusted with sugar and served with fresh jam.

We awoke the next morning to a very slushy kind of setting and ventured out again to explore the markets. It was still freezing cold and my winter hat just wasn’t cutting the mustard. Ushanka is one of those traditional Russian hats that always look super cozy so the hunt was on to find one.

As you can see my thin wooly hat was not very practical. Photo by Author.

We wandered around the markets admiring the beautiful buildings surrounding them whilst snacking on treats such as fudge, cheese, and cakes. We headed to the famous picturesque road of Kronprinsensgade for a bit of Christmas shopping. Later on, we ended up beside the river so we decided to take a river tour of the city which was a brilliant way to spend the afternoon and admire the architecture of Copenhagen. On the way back to the hotel I found my ushanka, a snowman, and some more Danish Glogg.

A very happy chappy because my head was super warm. Photo by Author.

As Sunday arrived we awoke to a thin blanket of whiteness as the snow had fallen again. Today's agenda had us heading for the famous Winter Wonderland in Tivoli Gardens which you can see in the picture I opened this article with. One big Christmas Market and a Winter Wonderland mixed together. After spending the afternoon exploring Tivoli Gardens we went for a big fat steak and then found a lovely spa to relax in for the evening as the snow was back and pretty brutal outside.

Monday arrived and led to us exploring the Christmas markets one final time before heading to the airport. A few things I feel like I missed out on whilst in Copenhagen. They’ve got a great Museum and there are two beautiful castles I wish I’d visited called Frederiksborg Castle and Kronberg Castle.

All in all, it was a great experience and I’d recommend visiting the Christmas Markets to everyone. With all the information I’ve provided in this article you should be able to build a brilliant trip to the wonderful city of Copenhagen.
