The Caged Bird
I will fly — a poem

I know what the caged bird feels When clouds are rolling ‘cross the sky And the rain is falling on the sod; I lift my face and entreat God. I have wings and I would fly: This is my deepest appeal, So I know what the caged bird feels.
I know why the caged bird sings: His voice is strong despite the bars. When sun is shining through the rain, My eyes are smiling through my tears; Against the bars I beat my wings For I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the freed bird flies, For wings are meant to carry you. A rainbow arcs above my head; I leave my cage, my wings are spread, And I will soar into the blue, Turn my back on all the lies. I know why the freed bird flies.
