The Birth of Miracles

A Story on how we give birth to miracles unknowingly.

This Sunrise is a Miracle for Humanity Image by Annelise Lords

Michelle Chambers rushes home after her interview at Sapphire Inc, the largest computer chip maker in the world. She chose Sapphire because of the integrity of the company. How they treat their employers. Their good health care package. Their Humanitarian efforts in and around the surrounding communities. Their location was a big part too. As she entered the living room, her Mom was heading into the kitchen. Turning around to face her daughter, she asks smiling, “Honey, you are back early?”

“That’s because I got the job Mom, as a System Analyst,” rushing towards her Mom humming the tune to ‘Wish Upon a Star.’ Mrs. Chambers joins in and they both dance their way into the kitchen.

Then Mrs. Chambers said, “sit down honey, let’s celebrate with some milk and cookies.”

They toast to long employment.

Five days later her cellphone rings and Michelle’s eyes glance at the caller ID. Her heartbeat quickens as she snatched up the phone. A few minutes later she screamed into the phone, “What the hell you mean you hired someone more qualified! You told me I got them. . ..,” she heard a click.

Her mother rushes in as she slumps to the floor her cellphone falling on the burgundy carpet.

Mrs. Chambers rushes to her, hugging her as she cried, slowly leading her to the sofa. She sits her down. Let her tears flow for a minute, releasing the fury and disappointment. Wiping her daughter’s eyes with the bottom of her apron, Mrs. Chambers encourages, “Every disappointment is for good.”

“Oh mom, I am not in school, this is the real world.,” Michelle said in tears.

Mrs. Chambers eases back her daughter and said, “the first time I said that was in the sixth grade when you were running for class president. Jasmine O’Malley won. 80% of the kids said they voted for you. Remember what I said?”

Wiping her eyes with the back of her right hand, Michelle said, “Yea, ten days later she left because her father got transferred and I was given the job.”

“Honey, her father didn’t get a transfer. He helped her to cheat by replacing the ballot box. The original box was thrown in their garbage bin. The Sanitation Department saw the school name on it while they were picking up their garbage and returned it to the school. Her parents were arrested and charged. She went to live with her grandparents in another state.”

Michelle’s mouth opens in shock.

Her mother continues, “In high school when you wanted to be the assistant editor of your school newspaper. Mrs. Allen gave her daughter Diana the job, and you came home crying? Do you remember what I said?”

“Yes Mom,” Michelle said wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. “You said what you always say, every disappointment is for good.”

“Ok, what happened next?” Mrs. Chambers asks grabbing the box of Kleenex off the coffee table facing them.

“The editor resigned, and I was offered the job,” Michelle said wiping her eyes and blowing her nose.

“You got a better position.”

“Oh mom,” she wails. “I want this job.”

Hugging her daughter, Mrs. Chambers encourages, “Baby, when one door closes, a bigger and better one will open.”

Michelle smile and said, “Mom, can you promise me something?”

“Anything for my baby.”

“Please, don’t ever die.”

Mrs. Chambers giggles a little and said, “that depends on how good of a daughter you are.”

“I will be good Mom, just for you,” Michelle promised.

“Now change into something more comfortable, and go for a walk to clear your mind,” Mrs. Chambers suggests.

Michelle kisses her mother and rushes upstairs to change. As she walks towards the door Mrs. Chambers calls out, “Hey princess, you forget your water and that little first-aid kit you carried in your drawstring bag.”

“Ah mom, I am the one who needs saving today,” Michelle said as her mother walks towards her with her black and red drawstring bag.

“Your cellphone is in it too,” her mom said.

Michelle took the bag, putting it over her shoulders, hugs her mother again, then head out. Five minutes later she reaches the park, her mind clouded with the bad news she just got. Suddenly, a scream grabs her attention. Following the direction of the sound, she saw a bloodied Cocker Spaniel running in her direction. His leash swaying behind him in the gentle breeze, a pit bull in pursuit. A crowd following them screaming. The dog jumps into her arms, the Pitbull behind him. She held him as the Pitbull charge at her. Something or someone rise her right foot and she kicks him so hard, he fell back, with a whimper. He lay there for a few seconds then rise to attack again, when someone grabs him by the collar.

Cradling the dog who was groaning in pain, with multiple bites on his beautiful tan and white

fur, that was bleeding.

A tall man dressed as if he was playing golf, approached her saying, “Thank you for saving my baby.” He reached out to take her and Michelle said, “she is bleeding badly. I have a first aid kit in my bag, let me try and stop the bleeding first.”

The man gently took her, as the crowd watched. Michelle took off her bag taking the first-aid kit, her water bottle, and cellphone out, knelt on the grass. Turning her bag inside out, then said, “put her here.” She found all her wounds, clean it with alcohol while calming her down to the tune of Wish Upon a Star. Putting antibiotic cream on her wounds.

While she attends to the dog, she heard a familiar voice said, “Auntie Michelle I am next, and I want the kitty cat band aid.”

Another familiar voice said, “I was here first.”

Another voice said, “Nothing is wrong with you. I have a scrape on my knee, I am next.”

Someone said, “Children, step away please.”

The dog licks her hand in thank you as she hands her back to her owner.

The owner of the Pitbull apologizes, and they exchange information. Michelle attends to the children that flocked her. She took out the band aids with beautiful pictures of dogs and cats and let them choose. She put her stuff away as the children ran off showing their band aid to each other.

“Miss, can I talk to you for a minute?” a voice asks.

Michelle turns facing the owner of the dog she just attends to. He walks over to her carrying his dog gently, then asks, “I am trying to remember where I have seen you. Do you always carry a First-Aid kit when you exercise?”

“Yes, I come here most days and lots of children are here playing and sometimes they play rough and hurt themselves or each other.”

“I see that,” he said staring into her eyes in admiration. “I remember you now, you were at Sapphire Inc’s Job Fair. Did they hire you?”

“No, the recruiter Mrs. Pitt said I got the job and five days later called me to tell me that they hired someone more qualified.”

“What’s your name?” he asks handing her his dog.

“Michelle Chambers,” she said taking the dog from him.

He reached in his pocket, took his cellphone out, dial then said, “Ann, James here, look in the box for the applicants from our last Job fair and read me the application for a Michelle Chambers.”

Everything was happening so fast, there wasn’t enough time to think. He listens for a while then said, “aren’t we looking for a manager in export?”

Michelle’s heartbeat rose, then he said before hanging up, “call her and tell her to come in tomorrow.” He turns to her and said, “My name is James Hamlin. I am the CEO and Owner of Sapphire. I never met anyone who travels with a first aid kit while exercising. That tells me a lot about your character. I want to hire people like you who think ahead and think of helping others. You are hired as a manager of our Export department. I know you don’t think you have the experience but having a first-aid kit in your bag while exercising in a part filled with children, tells me a lot. Plus, we will train you,” reaching out for his dog.

Michelle hands him his dog, fighting the tears of shock and joy.

A car stops nearby and two men in suits walk towards him, one of them said, “We called the vet Sir, and he said to bring her in now.”

“Tomorrow at eight,” he called out. “I will send a car for you; your address is on file. Thank you for helping my Angel,” he said, heading towards the black car.

Shock held her motionless, the ringing of her cellphone pulls her back into reality. She answers as if she wasn’t expecting the call. The lady told her what Mr. Hamlin said. She flew home, breathless opening the door screaming, “Mom, mom!”

Mrs. Chambers drops the plate she had in her hands, rushing out of the kitchen as it fell to the floor breaking into pieces.

“I got the job Mom,” Michelle screams. “I got the job!”

“Calm down child, before you give me a heart attack,” Mrs. Chambers said grabbing her daughter by both shoulders to steady her. Then said, leading her to the nearest sofa, “What did you get?”

Michelle told her mother everything that transpired, tears of joy streaming down. Wiping her eyes with Kleenex from a box beside the lamp on the end table, Michelle asks, “Mom, you are always right. Every time you said, ‘every disappointment is for good,’ a better door opens for me. It’s as if you knew something better was waiting for me behind the next door.”

“It’s because I believe in miracles honey, and they happen every day.”

“Was grandma always right too?”

Mrs. Chambers smiles widely, going back into the past, nodding she said, “She was wise, and I learned a lot from her. She taught me, that a mother’s love is like hope. It opens eyes, hearts, pockets, doors, and the actions of her children will do the rest. What I am saying baby, is that I gave you hope, and your kind and responsible nature opens the door to opportunities. And then miracles are born.”

In my country, these words are said often, ‘Every disappointment is for good.’And many believe that. A lot of us have proven it too. We give birth to miracles by our actions, choices, and decisions, and many of us aren’t aware of it. Do the right thing today, helping to create miracles for others.
