An unexpected turn of events in the past year. It has changed the technology landscape for the foreseeable future. The COVID pandemic shifted the priorities of every organization especially those relying on technology, in a matter of weeks.
Do you know what changed?
Organizations across the world had to shift to remote working. They became reliant on solutions— Cloud Technologies — that enable it. Until then Cloud Shift or Digital Transformation was a low priority and a good to have.
The pandemic and lockdowns made cloud adoption essential for the survival of the business.
So, what is in it for you, the employee?
Every crisis also brings opportunities.
At the beginning of the pandemic, many were afraid of layoffs. True, initially there were some layoffs brought on by the fear of a sluggish economy. But soon it became clear that this is the way-of-life forward for everyone.

As it stands today, hiring has accelerated in the tech sector. As companies shift to the cloud, there is a sudden spurt in demand for cloud-ready talent. I see companies offering huge sums of money to court the limited talent. Many instances I know of where the salary is mind-boggling. Something unimaginable a few months ago.
Looking at the demand for cloud technologies, you can expect a consistent demand for
- Cloud Engineers
- Cloud Architects
- Cloud Security Specialists
and many more jobs in AI, Data Analytics, Containers, DevOps, Automation, etc.
What should you do?
The “cloud landscape” is a set of technologies — simple and complex — from a Virtual Machine to AI. As a whole, it can be an intimidating beast.
Not to worry, there is good news.
Despite the complex array of technologies, the entry barrier to be a cloud engineer is incredibly low.
You don't need to know the entire spectrum of services to be a cloud engineer. If you are new to Cloud, you can study and certifying yourself on one of the fundamentals exams. All big cloud providers — Azure, AWS, GCP — offer these.
