To get out all of the emotions you’ve built up and held in?
Do you suppress those feelings so deep that when an advert comes on the TV about the starving children in Africa, you completely lose your sh*t and bawl like a baby wearing headphones?
I know I do.
Here is my playlist for when I need an emotional release. A cathartic cry to free myself of useless pent-up emotions.
“Crazy” by Cordrazine
When I first started listening to this song, I was in my early twenties.
I was dealing with the loss of some friends and other issues out of my control.
It was one of the times I felt really low. Even depressed.
take away all these days
i wont be
around no more
you know the score
around no more
you know oh well
all these tears are falling
from my
from these eyes
so many years ive tried
took away this moment
lord dont leave me down
dont ever
leave me down
im crazy
“Bright Eyes” by Art Garfunkel
I am crying just thinking about this song.
I remember first hearing it when I watched ‘Watership Down’ so I always think of the old rabbit that dies and follows the black rabbit to heaven.
Bright eyes
Burning like fire
Bright eyes
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes
Is it a kind of shadow
Reaching into the night
Wandering over the hills unseen
Or is it a dream?
“Against All Odds” by Phil Collins
This song always makes me think of the day my first love walked and disappeared for nine years. Read story here.
Tears spring into my eyes as soon as this song starts with its minor chords and sad piano.
How can I just let you walk away, just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh
You’re the only one who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me,
When all I can do is watch you leave
Cause we’ve shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears
You’re the only one who really knew me at all
“Never Let Me Go” by Florence + The Machine
I remember bawling in my car after I’d been told that one of the dogs my rescue group was trying to rescue was going to be destroyed by the council.
I was bawling and singing at the top of my lungs;
Never let me go
Never let me go
Delivered me
Never let me go
Never let me go
And it’s over (Never let me go, never let me go)
And I’m going under (Never let me go, never let me go)
But I’m not giving up (Never let me go, never let me go)
I’m just giving in (Never let me go, never let me go)
“Don’t Give Up” by Peter Gabriel (Feat. Kate Bush)
I’m a big Peter Gabriel fan and it was hard to pick one song but this one helps gets the “feels” moving.
This brings back memories of a friendship that broke apart and couldn’t be repaired.
I love how emotional his voice gets in the second verse below.
rest your head
you worry too much
it’s going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don’t give up
please don’t give up
‘got to walk out of here
I can’t take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river’s flowing
that river’s flowing
“Angel” by Sarah McLachlan
Most of Sarah McLachlan’s songs make you feel sad. Her voice is so beautiful and haunting.
I was obsessed with her songs throughout my twenties. There was a lot going on in those days.
In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
“Possession” by Sarah McLachlan
The night is my companion
And solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here
And not be satisfied
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I’ll take your breath away
And after I’d wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
Through this world I’ve stumbled
So many times betrayed
Trying to find an honest word
To find the truth enslaved
“In A Country Churchyard” by Chris de Burgh
Call me a dork, but I love Chris de Burgh. His music filled my home growing up.
There are so many songs to choose from but this one in particular helps me cry.
Many years have fallen on that golden country morning
The graveyard’s overgrown, the church lies in ruins
Ivy on the walls and ravens wheeling round above me
As I made my way towards the last remaining headstone
I fell to my knees, read the lines beneath the leaves
And suddenly it seemed to me
I heard the words like singing in the trees…
“Let your love shine on
For we are the stars in the sky
Let your love shine strong
Until the day you fly…
Let your love shine on
For we are the stars in the sky
Let your love shine strong
Until the day you fly…
Fly away”…
There’s many more songs I could add to this but I’ve gone and depressed myself by revisiting my list of sad songs.
I wasn’t in need of a ‘Cry-fest.’ I am now. Doh!
Each person resonates differently with certain songs.
The emotions come from the composition of chords, instruments and vocals or from the memories that are conjured up by the song.
Whatever the reason, it’s good to cry. It’s healthy and restorative.
