Abstract

In her article, Joan Gershman critiques the overused clichés prevalent in senior online dating profiles, advocating for more originality and honesty. She calls out lines like "long walks on the beach" for their lack of authenticity and offers alternative, more genuine expressions. Gershman encourages the submission of creative and honest dating lines, ultimately awarding Misty Rae for her line that humorously acknowledges the realities of aging and the desire for companionship. The article underscores the value of straightforwardness and a simple sense of humor in attracting senior women, who are not necessarily seeking adventurous or poetic partners but rather genuine companionship.

Opinions

  • The article suggests that senior men should focus on being truthful about their desires and limitations rather than trying to impress with exaggerated claims.
  • The author appreciates the Brad Pitt analogy used by Misty Rae, highlighting the importance of relatability and the shared experience of aging.
  • Gershman emphasizes that creativity and honesty in writing, even in the form of a dating line, can be both educational and entertaining.
  • She expresses a preference for companionship and good times over materialistic displays of affection or grand adventures.
  • The author notes that despite the importance of creativity in dating profiles, the response to her call for submissions was underwhelming, possibly due to the holiday season.

The Best Online Dating “Line” Award Goes to…

Keeping my promise to award a trophy for the most honest senior online dating “line”

In one of my most recent articles, I lamented the lack of originality in the online dating “lines” used by the men seeking to charm us senior ladies.

I listed the 5 most unoriginal, repetitive ones, my comments about them, and my suggestions for alternative lines that were honest and original.

This is an example taken from that article:

OVERUSED LINE: I love to take long walks on the beach in the early morning to watch the sunrise to wake another day.

MY COMMENT: If everyone who wrote about “long walks on the beach” were actually taking those walks, there would be no room on any beach on earth for anyone to stand, never mind, walk.

MY ALTERNATIVE: I’m 75 years old; my days of remaining upright while walking on lumpy sand are long gone. I’m good with a short walk on a flat pier — you know, one on which I won’t fall on my face and where there are plenty of benches for us to sit on and watch the surf.

I asked for your submissions for better lines that would stop a senior lady and cause her to pay attention and respond.

Honestly, the senior women I know aren’t looking for “life soulmates,” hikers, mountain climbers, gym rats, or men who fancy themselves poets by repeating overused phrases such as “Live life not just be alive” and “Life is not measured by the breaths that we take…but by the moments that take our breath away!” I stopped counting how many times those lines were used.

Women are looking for HONESTY and a good sense of humor.

So without further ado (sorry for the cliche )…the trophy goes to…Misty Rae…for her amusing, but honest, and in my opinion, click-worthy line.

“I’m old, I’m lonely, I don’t look like Brad Pitt because even Brad Pitt doesn’t look like Brad Pitt anymore. If you’re looking for honesty, companionship, and the odd good time, I’m your fella.”

Why did I choose this line? Why do I like it so much? Because it checks all the boxes I am looking for in a guy:

Straight forward — He’s old and lonely. So am I.

Simple sense of humor — I loved the Brad Pitt analogy. Recently I saw a picture of Brad Pitt and thought to myself — Gee, he doesn’t look like Brad Pitt.

Honesty — He’s not promising “fine dining”, trips on his “modest” boat, or world tours. He’s looking for companionship. So am I.

Full Disclosure — Not to take away from her accomplishment, but Misty Rae kind of won by default, as I did not receive the overwhelming amount of responses that I had hoped for. Maybe everyone was too busy with holiday planning, shopping, and running themselves ragged to join in a little fun and write a few cute lines.

An exercise like this one isn’t just for amusement. We learn a lot about writing and creativity when we read each others’ work, even if it’s a comedic line or two.

HONORABLE MENTION: This was NOT a “line” written to attract women. It was an honest admission by one of my male readers. I have to give a shout-out to the reader who was brave enough to admit that during his online dating days, he used the “walks on the beach” line. From the “sigh” he wrote at the end of his admission, I can only assume he regretted his line choice.

In conclusion, let me say that although I will not be presenting another award, I would still like to read some original, honest lines that you think would attract us senior ladies.

Because I can assure you, if anyone writes about his “modest” career in high finance, his multiple world tours that he would love to repeat with the “right” lady, tells me how he hikes five miles a day, or quotes lame, overused poetic lines, he’s not getting one single swipe, click, or response of any type from little old me.
