Looking to start investing in stocks? Here are the best brokerages offered in the U.K

As someone who has been investing in the stock market for the past 4 years, I am eager to get more people involved in investing in stocks to reap the rewards of economic growth, all thanks to capitalism.

I have ranked below the four Brokerages which I have personally used, all of which I highly recommend to beginners. They all have their pros and cons which I have mentioned so choose carefully based on your own personal goals.

  1. Interactive Brokers

Pros

  • Highly competitive fees across all their products
  • Most established brokerage on this list with the best reputation
  • Wide range of product offerings including options trading which is difficult to find in the UK.
  • Able to open an ISA & SIPP account for tax benefits
  • Many great research tools used by even professional investors
  • Great customer support who are highly competent and knowledgeable on the different products.

Cons

  • The process to open an account is long winded compared to the other brokers in this list.
  • The trading platform may feel overwhelming to some due to all the product offerings as well as instruments and tools offered for investing.

2. Freetrade

Pros

  • Beginner friendly user interface so perfect for someone just getting started with investing
  • Fractional shares are great if you are starting off with a small balance
  • Able to open an ISA & SIPP account for tax benefits

Cons

  • They have been on the decline recently due to poor customer support who usually take 3+ days to get back to customer queries
  • Need to use paid plan to access all features such as ISAs & Limit Orders
  • Although they offer commission free trading, you will have to pay 0.99% Fx rate fees for both buying and selling non-UK stocks which can quickly add up!
  • Limited research tools offered for performing both technical and fundemantal analysis compared to Interactive Brokers
  • Cannot trade options :(

3. Stake

Pros

  • Fractional shares are great if you are starting off with a small balance
  • Over 6,000 US stocks and ETFs to choose from

Cons

  • You can only invest in US stocks at the moment
  • Only a General Investment Account (GIA) available so no tax-efficient accounts such as ISAs & SIPPs
  • Limited research tools offered for performing both technical and fundamental analysis compared to Interactive Brokers
  • Need to use paid plan to access all features
  • Cannot trade options :(

4. Trading 212

Pros

  • Beginner friendly user interface so perfect for someone just getting started with investing
  • Great & responsive customer support team
  • Low Fx fees of only 0.15% which is a lot less than Freetrade

Cons

  • Limited research tools offered for performing both technical and fundamental analysis compared to Interactive Brokers
  • Cannot trade options :(

Based on my experience, Interactive Brokers is the best brokerage in the UK for investing and trading stocks due to their wide range of product offerings that is unmatched.
