The Benefits Of A Dedicated Workspace When Working Remotely
Here’s how to focus your attention, avoid distraction and strike a balance between productivity and the comforts of your own home.
With High-speed WiFi and connectivity all over the world means we can work from anywhere, allowing you to have an ‘office’ wherever you want.
From bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens to cafes and co-works spaces — this is a list of just a few spaces we’ve all been able to call our office since the start of COVID-19, world lockdowns and home isolations.
The growing world of remote workers have been working from many of these places and more, over the years. When working remotely, you can essentially call your office, anywhere you are working, so long as it’s a space that is comfortable enough to work from, whether that's your home, an Airbnb or a coliving.
Working remotely full-time is certainly becoming more mainstream than ever before and although working from home is comfortable and convenient, remote workers still face their own challenges. From struggling to deal with the distractions whilst striking a balance between productivity and the comforts of our own home.
Whilst the pandemic has brought us new ways of working, whether that's from home or remotely, it’s still important to have a dedicated space for work.
For most, working from home means you never really leave the office behind, and if you don’t set a schedule then it’s easy for the lines to blur between work time and your time — carving out a schedule and sticking to it is super important if you want to maximise your productivity and stay distraction-free.
Having this dedicated workspace will help you focus your attention on work and avoid distraction.
Here are the benefits of having a dedicated workspace:
- Finding space in your house that is separate from the people you live with, will immediately help you focus.
- Having separate space will mean it’s quieter, limiting any surrounding distractions from other people that you live with.
- Being “distraction-free” works both ways so if you live with people, let them know you’re working, and heading into your ‘office’ for the day. That way they’ll be able to respect your working hours.
- If, even with a separate space, your house is still noisy but find yourself with a day full of calls, try using a service like krisp.ai — it’ll block out your background noise.
- Being in an office environment means you’ll be far away from the kitchen, and avoid the temptation of any guilty snacking during the work day!
- You get to feel like you’re going to the ‘office’ everyday without having to waste time commuting and therefore do something better with that time.
- You can leave this space behind when you’ve finished work and be able to separate work from fun.
- Final but biggest pro for me —you’ll notice an increase in productivity when your workspace is separate from any areas in the hours where you usually relax. You can go to this space and fully focus right away!
Work-life balance
Whilst working from home, it may seem that your personal life and work-life have somewhat merged together, but by keeping your work space separate from where everything else in life happens will help avoid the merging. Encouraging you to walk away from your laptop at the end of the day and be able to come back feeling fresh the next morning — doing this will help you set boundaries.
With flexible schedules, full control over your day it makes work a lot easier to balance with your life. For me, working remotely allows me the freedom to plan my own day, allowing my career and personal life to coexist — it’s a lifestyle choice I would never change.
