The Beauty of Wildflowers
A field of flowers filled with life

Wildflowers are often underrated. Downgraded as “weeds”. Unwanted flowers. Unwanted plants in places where nobody planted them. But wildflowers don’t care about their treatment. Their status in nature. They just grow. Anywhere and everywhere. And they bloom. A lot.
Wildflowers are actually very important for the cycle of life. Bees and other insects depend on them. In a field of wildflowers, there are always several plants which bloom. There is always food for the bees and other pollinators.

In times where humans take over the world and destroy more and more nature, there is not much place left for pollinators. They simply don’t find any more flowers. In order to save bees a lot of projects started up. Projects that include planting wildflowers in your garden. Planting wildflowers in the cities. And planting wildflowers wherever there is space for a small field of flowers.

Living in a very rural environment in Germany, surrounded only by small villages and lots of forests, there are lots of bees and wasps all around me. But there are also lots of fields of wildflowers.
They obviously grow next to roads and along the railway line. But you find them also in gardens and on fields. Some farmers actually leave some land uncultivated. Just to give wildflowers a place to grow. And to give bees a place to feed on.

I drive past one of these fields on my way to work. It’s not a huge part of the land. Maybe three meters wide and about 20 meters long. But it’s enough. It’s covered in beautiful flowers.
Yellow. Orange. Red. Blue. Purple. White. And obviously lots of green.

Some people would say it is ugly. There is no order in the field. No system. Flowers need to be separated from each other. On one side the sunflowers and on the other side the blue cornflowers. But not everything in life has to be clean and placed in blocks.
Sometimes we just need to leave nature as it is. Don’t cut down trees. Let the broken ones lie where they are. They provide new ones with nutrients. Sometimes we shouldn’t pull out weeds. Let weeds become blooming wildflowers.

In this small field of nature is so much life. There is a constant buzzing going on. You can hear the insects humming. Butterflies make a dance around the stunningly blooming flowers. Mice are running deep down between the stem of the plants.

The variety you can find in this small field is impressive. So many different colors. So many different types of flowers. So many different sizes of plants.

Every day when I cycle past this field I slow down a bit. I glance over the field of flowers, spot a lot of insects flying above it, and smile about the sight of it.

Do you also have a field of wildflowers in your neighborhood? Or do you even allow wildflowers to grow and bloom in your own garden? Tell me about it. Show me the beauty of the wildflowers in your country.
