The Beautiful, Profound Power of Trekking in the Wilderness

Nature prompt — Second week of August: The nature around me soothes my soul.

The love for nature coincides with my love for poetry, as they have both been influential entities when coping with change, sadness, triumphs, but often highly stressful situations in life.

It is befitting to describe my first times experiencing the power of nature through the artistic language of poetry. From church camp, to hurricane evacuee, to modern day nature enthusiast, I enjoy the sights, the sounds, and the smells of the great outdoors surrounded by trees and paths when I have the chance to visit.

My head is bowed, low and humble, ashamed of how long it has been since my last plight. visiting your panoramic alter, your beauty, pulling myself away from the internal struggle of the city and constant fight. I find time to come to you, to visit you a few times when the outsiders are cruel and show low intolerance. I come to you ready to pour out my heart and soul, making space for new hopes and making room to give peace a chance.

I am reminded of my trek to nowhere Texas, a constant grapple of the environment that was foreign to me. Surviving the animated sounds from counselors and teens, while nature roared and howled around us, as I huddled in fear under a tree. I woke up, alive and renewed, realizing nature did not want to swallow me whole. It was up to me to feel carefree and appreciate my existence in nature and its role.

I was only a visitor in this foreign place, a guest in the eyes of this exotic woodland. Only an open mind would comprehend the basic ground before him. Only a calm mind would revere in awe and understand. Young in body but an old soul in mind and heart, I understand the message you and your domain are saying. I walk leisurely and so carefree upon the padded grass, often enjoying what season the wilderness is displaying.

Your aromas are like swamp moss and fried ash, and cedar. Sometimes the breeze of the lake. Your ground, moist and musty, reminds me of the morning dew. The perfect soothing smell for my nostrils to intake. I stay true to my heart as you are true to my eyes, often wondering when I will embrace you again. You are my comforter, my solemn will to live. You are my sanctuary, close to being my best friend.
