LIFE LESSONS FROM THE FLOOR SWEEP

The Barbershop Scholar

A 100-word short story. Things aren’t always what they seem.

Barbershop Photo by Tim Mossholder from Pexels

As a boy, I swept the barbershop for $1.00 a week.

Every week, one customer would tell the barber, “Watch this. Your worker isn’t too smart.”

He’d hold out his hands with a dollar in one and two quarters in the other, and say, “Okay, Red. Which one do you want?”

I always took the $.50, and he’d laugh and laugh.

One night the owner asked, “Stephen, why do you always take the 50 cents instead of the dollar?”

I said, “If I took the dollar, he wouldn’t ask me anymore.”

The owner laughed until tears ran down his face.
