The Alpine Manor Murders: A Tragedy Behind Closed Doors
The Sinister Games Played By The Nurses From Hell In The Name Of Love

Content Warning: This episode talks about self-harm, the reader’s discretion is advised.
The deaths at Alpine Manor started as a game. At first, the killers planned to choose their victims alphabetically, with their initials spelling MURDER as a private joke on the police.
The modus operandi of Gwendolyn Gail Graham and Catherine May Wood
Nursing homes are supposed to be a haven for the residents under their care. Family members of the residents trust the nurses and aides employed by the management to care for and comfort them in their times of need. The very thought of a caretaker abusing or worse, physically harming their residents is a horrifying one.
Fans of the American Horror Story franchise will know that the series has a knack for turning our greatest fears into an episode on screen. One of my favorite on-screen villains in the franchise comes from season 6, Roanoke.
In episode 2, a pair of twisted nurses, Miranda and Bridget Jane attempted to spell the word murder by killing victims with the corresponding initials in their names. But as frightening as the actresses were on screen, they pale in comparison to what their real-life counterparts did.
In the dead of the night when all seems quiet and you think you’re safe that’s when evil comes out to play.
Criminal File investigates, Case #11 — The Alpine Manor Murders
The Alpine Manor
Alpine Manor was a residential facility that catered to the elderly and disabled or anyone in general who needed a high level of dedicated care and support in their day-to-day lives.
Located in Walker, Michigan, Alpine Manor was equipped with a team of professional nurses trained to work with residents who suffered from Alzheimer’s or dementia.
The Manor was forced to close its doors in 1990 after two of their own nurses were found guilty of killing five elderly women under their care. The nurses, Catherine May Wood and Gwendolyn Gail Graham both suffered from a terrible childhood growing up and ended up working together at the Alpine Manor after running away from their family.
Both girls started off as friends and quickly developed a strong bond owing to their common shared suffering during their younger years. Their bond developed into a romantic relationship and they would often pick up the same shift and hang out together at bars after work. They eventually moved in together and their obsession with the other’s daily lives would ultimately lead them down a very dark pathway.

Catherine May Wood
Catherine May Wood was born on March 7, 1962, on a military base in Washington. Henceforth I’ll be addressing her as Cathy Wood. Her father was a full-time serviceman and her mother was a stay-at-home mom.
Cathy’s father was never the same after coming home from the Vietnam War and relied on alcohol to numb his pain. He became abusive and would take out his anger on his family. Cathy and her sister always avoided their father and locked themselves in their room during his fits of rage while their mother watched on helplessly. In Cathy’s words, the war turned him into a terrible man.
Sadly Cathy’s life outside of her family wasn’t any easier. She struggled to make any friends owing to low self-esteem and became a victim of bullying, she had to spend most of her time in school alone on the playground, reading.
Her father became increasingly abusive as Cathy grew up and would often ridicule her appearance, height, and weight which destroyed any semblance of self-esteem that she had.
At the age of 14, Cathy would get into her first relationship with a boy named David and spend most of her time at his house. She didn’t want to bring David to her house mostly due to the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father, her mother was understanding of this and would let Cathy hang out with David after school and on the weekends.
This charade would soon fall apart when Cathy’s mom went to pick her up from David’s house and was shocked to see that David, was in fact a girl named Debbie, and Cathy had been seeing a girl this whole time.
Cathy’s parents went ballistic and try as she might, Cathy was forced to end things with Debbie. This was when Cathy started developing a habit of lying and would later be proven to be a pathological and compulsive liar.
Cathy was 17 when met her soon-to-be husband Ken Wood, the pair fell in love and just 8 months later they would be married and eagerly expecting the arrival of their firstborn. But life was not all rosy for the young newlyweds, Cathy’s mom started getting insanely jealous of her and made life a living hell for her son-in-law.
The couple’s mental health quickly spiraled and Cathy, owing to the stress given by her parents became severely depressed and used food as a coping mechanism which caused her weight to balloon to 450 pounds (204 kg).
The young couple knew that something had to be done if they wanted their child to grow up in a safe environment and with the support of Ken, Cathy started pursuing an education that would ultimately land her a job as a nurse’s aide at Alpine Manor.

Gwendolyn Gail Graham
Gwendolyn Gail Graham was born on August 6, 1963, in Santa Monica California. Henceforth I’ll be addressing her as Gwen Graham. Similar to Cathy, she had a tough upbringing during her adolescent years.
Her father was a stern and cruel man who believed that children must never be given any form of physical affection or any affection for that matter as he believed that love would make a child weak.
Before moving to a farm in Texas at the age of 10, Gwen’s family spent most of her younger years moving from place to place making it difficult for her to establish any meaningful relationships.
She spent most of her time alone as not even her own family would show her the affection that she craved. Her situation was made infinitely worse when her father started abusing her emotionally and sexually.
She resorted to self-harm to make herself look ‘ugly’ so that her father would stop abusing her. Imagine a child forced to go to such extreme lengths just to protect herself…
Gwen had a dog which she absolutely adored, the dog was her best friend and the only one that could comfort her when she was upset. When the dog fell sick, Gwen’s father forced her brother to put the dog down while making Gwen watch. As you can imagine this greatly traumatized both kids.
There is a whole list of horrible things that Gwen’s father did that I will not be listing down. Remember Mr. Cruel? — Some things are best left unsaid.
Gwen briefly attended a nursing vocational school in her late teenage years before dropping out. At the age of 20, Gwen met her first girlfriend, a 28-year-old named Fran and the couple moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where Fran helped Gwen land a job in the Alpine Manor.

Two Wounded Souls
Cathy and Gwen first met each other on one of their routine night shifts and they clicked almost immediately, if you had heard the two of them chatting you would have assumed they had known each other their whole lives.
They spent every minute that they could at work together, in the cafeteria, on breaks, during shift hours, and just three weeks after meeting the two decided to move in together. They initially told their colleagues that they were just good friends but everyone could tell that there was something else going on between them.
Cathy and Gwen knew that they wanted to be together and made the decision to break up with their respective partners. Gwen had no problem ending things with her former girlfriend Fran but Cathy’s situation was a lot trickier and her husband did not take too kindly to the sudden revelation.
After a long and tedious legal process, Cathy and her husband would get divorced and he received full custody of their daughter. Hearts were broken and households were torn apart but Cathy and Gwen got what they wanted, and they were finally together.
But they would soon see just how toxic they were for each other.
Mutual Destruction
Cathy and Gwen encouraged each other to indulge in self-destructive behaviors and would frequently get black-out drunk every night after work. After the initial thrill of dating and flirting with each other at the workplace subsided things began turning sour.
The pair often got into full-blown arguments that would turn physical. Their entire relationship can be summed up as a series of manipulation, physical assaults, and screaming matches. They made no effort to hide the ugly side of their relationship and would get violent with each other even at work.
After a few weeks of destructive behavior, the couple figured out a way to work out their differences, instead of taking their anger out on each other they would channel their rage onto others.
They began pulling increasingly dangerous pranks on their fellow staff members at Alpine Manor and quickly started doing the same to the elderly residents staying there. Unlike their fellow co-workers, the residents were unable to speak up for themselves and even if they did, no one would believe them that their nurses were tormenting them.
One of Cathy and Gwen’s favorite methods of torturing the residents was to discreetly hide them in secluded corners for hours on end, depriving them of their much-needed medication. Their actions were incredibly sadistic and they took pride in watching the residents suffer.
Staff members who spoke to the police recalled Cathy and Gwen behaving suspiciously and were heard saying weird things but at the time, they thought the couple was just doing things behind their bosses’ backs. But no one could even imagine the atrocities that the couple was committing behind closed doors.
A Horrifying Tell-All By Cathy
Cathy and her ex-husband Ken Wood were still in contact after their divorce and in 1998, Cathy reached out to Ken saying that she had broken up with Gwen. The couple had been together for slightly over a year between 1986 and 1987.
It turns out that Cathy caught Gwen cheating on her with another nurse’s aide at their workplace and Cathy finally had enough, calling off the relationship. Ken was the only person that Cathy had left in her life so she told him everything about her relationship with Gwen including some extremely horrifying secrets.
Cathy revealed that Gwen wanted a sadistic/masochistic type of relationship and since Cathy was easily submissive, she would always give in to Gwen. Their bedroom activities started off normal and enjoyable but Gwen eventually became more and more aggressive and violent and at one point Cathy was genuinely afraid for her life.
I am not going to list down the details but one of Gwen’s favorite bedroom acts involved using a gun on Cathy. Detective, just trust me, you don’t want to know any more than this.
The couple frequently talked about what it would be like to kill people and to see the look on their faces. It was all fun and games until Cathy realized Gwen might actually be looking to make their fantasies a reality.
Marguerite Chambers
Marguerite Chambers was a 60-year-old resident with Alzheimer’s and needed constant live-in care for all of her basic needs but despite her condition, she was generally in good shape.
During one of Cathy’s night shifts, after she had given medications to the residents under her charge and put them to bed, Gwen dragged her to Marguerite’s bedroom and made Cathy stand guard outside.
Unsure of what was happening Cathy obeyed and to her horror, Gwen covered Marguerite’s face with a damp cloth, the 60-year-old tried to fight back but was easily overpowered. A few minutes later, Marguerite went limp.
Gwen took a minute to enjoy her handiwork before grabbing Cathy by the hand and returning to their shift, Cathy was mortified but Gwen told her to act normal and wait for someone else to discover Marguerite’s body.
An hour later, another staff member discovered Marguerite’s body, and while everyone was saddened at her passing they also knew that with Marguerite’s declining health it was only a matter of time.
Cathy and Gwen acted shocked along with everyone else and soon after Marguerite was ruled to have died by natural causes and no one suspected otherwise.
Marguerite Chambers was the first victim at the hands of the Lethal Lovers, a moniker given to the couple by the media later on.

Forever and Five Days
Cathy and Gwen started their killing spree with the intention of turning it into a game. They would pick our victims with initials corresponding to the word murder starting with Marguerite but quickly gave up because it was difficult to find a suitable victim with the initial U.
They changed their M.O. to target victims who were easy to kill. The Lethal Lovers claimed a total of 5 lives and promised to love each other forever and a day, adding on another day for each victim that they killed resulting in a promise to love each other forever and five days.
Another disturbing detail about their crimes was that the couple would make love in the Alpine Manor after killing a resident.
The following is a list of all the victims of the Lethal Lovers.
I won’t be listing down how each of the victims died because that will just make this article insanely long. I recommend listening to the Case File podcast for more details.
- Mae Mason (79)
- Edith Cole (89)
- Marguerite Chambers (60)
- Myrtle Luce (95)
- Belle Burkhard (74)
Their relationship never made sense to me, if you and your partner were secretly murdering people together why would you ever want to risk breaking up the relationship? Why cheat on the one person that knows all your darkest secrets?
I can love you Gwen
I think you’re great
For this afternoon I cannot wait
That’s when we’ll wake up &
That’s when I’ll kiss you
That’s when I’ll hold you
Oh Gwen, I miss you.
Bunny hop over here
And let me lick you on the ear.
I want to get married
Right now right away
Don’t make me wait
Till the day when you’re mine
Oh, please say
You’ll be mine Forever and five days
A poem that was written by Cathy for Gwen during their trial.

Investigation and Subsequent Arrest
Cathy’s husband Ken initially kept the couple’s murderous secret to himself before finally caving to his guilt and reporting it to the police. The police were initially skeptical of the story but decided to bring Cathy in for questioning just to be safe.
Cathy broke under pressure and threw Gwen under the bus, she painted Gwen as the mastermind and the one that did the actual killings. The police exhumed two of the victims who had yet to be cremated but they were unable to find any evidence of homicide which is not uncommon for cases of smothering. But investigators eventually ruled their deaths as homicide owing to Cathy’s increasingly desperate interviews.
An arrest warrant was issued for Gwen and both Cathy Wood and Gwendolyn Graham were tried for murder. Cathy managed to get a reduced sentence by pinning all the blame on Gwen citing the abuse that she had suffered at the hands of Gwen. The jury was swayed by Cathy’s story which was backed by Gwen’s new girlfriend who revealed that she had confessed to the five murders.
Gwendolyn Graham was found guilty of five counts of murder and sentenced to five life sentences, she is currently housed in Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility.
Cathy Wood was charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years for each count and was eligible for parole in March of 2005. She was held in the Federal Correctional Institution, Tallahassee, and was officially released on January 16, 2020.

Closing Out The Case
Gwendolyn Graham and Cathy Wood both suffered greatly at the hands of their own family growing up but that does not justify the horrific crimes that they have committed in their later years. They are often regarded as some of America’s most vile female serial killers who used their position of authority to prey on the vulnerable and helpless all for the sake of their twisted love and promises to each other.
As we close out this case, please remember that Cathy and Gwen were two exceptions that broke the trust of their community and the oath that they took to care for their patients.
The vast majority of nurses and healthcare professionals work tirelessly for the sake of their patients and must be respected and commended for all their hard work.
Remember to be kind to your healthcare workers and do not use this case as an excuse to mistreat them. Until next time, Detective.
