TRAVEL

The A-Z of My Favourite Travel Destinations — P is for Peru

Peru adventures in December 2017

Laguana Humantay — © Robert G. Longpré

We took a van to visit Laguna Humantay before we decided to leave Cusco in order to discover a lot more of Peru. Now that was a hike and a half. We travelled from Cusco with six others to check out a lake that looked like it could rival anything found in the Rocky Mountains in Canada.

We began a hike at an elevation of 3,800 metres with our destination being at 4,200 metres. It took quite a while with rest stops because of the altitude, but we finally made it there on our own. We were the oldest in the group. Two road horses to reach the lake and the two youngest needed oxygen before giving up upon returning to the base camp.

We left Cusco in the late evening, travelling by bus overnight to reach Lake Titicaca and the city of Puno. We had the day to explore this city and the floating village. The ride to the floating village was on one of these reed boats.

Vicuña beside an old rail — © Robert G. Longpré

After a night spent in Arequipa, we headed past volcanoes, uphill all the way. Once we were again at more than 4,000 metres above sea level, we saw vicuña, a wild animal that is found on the Peruvian flag. They were a protected species that only lives at high altitudes.

Andean Condors — © Robert G. Longpré

Our destination was the Colca Canyon where we hoped to see the Andean Condor. We lucked out and got to see them roost as well as glide in the currents of a valley that lay two miles below.

Of course that just gave us an excuse for another couple photo at the Mirador Cruz del Condor where the condors are most easily seen and photographed when the valley isn’t shrouded in clouds.

Like every place we have visited, there are too many photos. Our time in Peru came to an end in Lima. Next stop Olon, Ecuador
