Summary

In 2023, the author, Buddy Gott, embarked on a personal challenge to listen to 112 new-to-me albums, spanning both new releases and older albums they had never heard before, despite initially planning to listen to only 52.

Abstract

Buddy Gott, a music enthusiast, took on the challenge of exploring 112 new-to-me albums throughout 2023. This endeavor was a continuation of a similar challenge from the previous year, where Gott listened to 101 albums for the first time. Initially, Gott intended to scale back the music listening goal for 2023 to 52 albums, focusing instead on other music and movie-watching goals. However, the allure of discovering new music proved too strong, and by the end of January, Gott had already listened to 10 new albums. This prompted a return to the original, more ambitious target. While not committing to reviewing all 112 albums, Gott plans to write about some of them on Medium and will update the Master List with each new album experience. The challenge, originally conceived by Nia Simone McLeod, has become a passion project for Gott, who encourages others to join in the musical exploration.

  • The challenge's creator, Nia Simone McLeod, is credited with inspiring Gott and others to engage in this musical exploration.
  • Gott recognizes the time investment required to listen to and review 100 albums, which influences their decision to review selectively.

In 2022, I took part in a challenge to listen to 100 new-to-me albums. It didn’t matter if they were new releases or old ones. They just needed to be albums I’d never heard before.

The challenge was created by Nia Simone McLeod — and me, Kevin Alexander, Nicole Brown, and several others quickly followed her lead. I had a LOT of fun doing it and I ended up listening to 101 albums I’d never heard before.

If you’d like to see what they were, here is my Master List of them.

At the start of 2023, I told myself that I wasn’t going to repeat the challenge. I wrote here about other music goals and movie-watching goals I had for the year. I wrote that I was going to alter my previous new-to-me albums goal and try to listen to only 52 new ones in 2023.

Yeah.

That plan didn’t last very long.

I got to the end of January and saw that I had already listened to 10 new-to-me albums! Just one month into 2023 and I was already a tenth of the way to 100 albums.

The ‘old’ challenge was calling out to me!

How could I not go for 100 again this year, right?

Right!

Because it takes a lot of time to listen to and write reviews for 100 albums, I’m not going to be writing reviews or featured articles on Medium about all of the albums — but I will be doing that for some of them. When I do, I’ll provide hyperlinks to those pieces in the above list.

As I did with my Master List last year, I’ll be updating this year’s Master List (above) with each new-to-me album I listen to between now and December 31, 2023.

P.S. — It’s never too late to join the challenge! If you decide to do it, or a modified or alternate version of it, please let me (the name is Gott — Buddy Gott) know!
