My Big Music Listening & Movie Watching Challenges for 2023

This is what I’ll be doing. Come and join me, if you like!

At the beginning of 2022, music lover and writer Nia Simone McLeod shared here on Medium that she was challenging herself to listen to at least 100 new-to-her albums throughout the year. She also challenged others to do the same.

Me, Kevin Alexander, and several others took her up on that challenge. I can’t speak for any of the others, but I had A LOT of fun doing it! Not only did I end up hearing a lot of music by acts I already liked, but I also delved into the music of artists and genres that I don’t normally listen to.

I repeat: I HAD A LOT OF FUN!

I cut it pretty close to the wire, though, and just hit my one-hundredth new-to-me album this week. I then decided to go one further, so I ended up listening to 101 albums I’d never heard before.

WOOHOO!!!

By the way, if you’d like to see what those 101 albums were, and also see the system I use for how I rate albums, here is my ‘Master List’ for the above challenge:

My Music Listening Goal For 2023

I’ve been debating whether or not to repeat the ‘100 New-To-Me Albums’ challenge again in 2023. Honestly, even as I type these words, I’m still debating it.

Okay, I’ve decided. Because I’m also going to be doing a reading challenge on Goodreads (follow me there, if you like) and a movie watching challenge (see below,) I’m going to set a much smaller listening goal for the year:

52 Albums

One for each week of the year! As I did in 2022, I’m going to branch out a lot and try to discover artists that are completely new to me, as well as listen to a lot of my favorites. I’m also going to listen to more jazz, country, rap, and instrumental music than I normally do.

If it looks like I’m going to reach 52 albums or exceed that number much earlier than I expect to, then I’ll reset my goal to a higher number. I’ll see how it goes!

My Movie Watching Goal For 2023

When I was a teenager and in my early 20s, I used to set yearly goals for myself to see how many movies I could watch each calendar year.

I usually set it for 100 movies. This was especially easy to accomplish when I was still in school and had three months off every summer!

I used to have a lot of fun with those self-imposed challenges, so I decided to do it again. However, I’m going for a much lower goal this time around:

25 Movies

Unlike my Listening Challenge where all the albums must be new-to-me, I’m going to include movies that I have previously seen and am rewatching. However, I’m only going to count them once. So, if I end up watching Animal House four or five times (which is very possible), only one of those viewings will count toward my goal.

Part of my movie watching goal is to watch a lot of classic films I’ve never seen before, going back as far as the 1930s and 1940s. I especially want to watch classics starring Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, James Stewart, John Wayne, and other legendary stars from the 1940s and 1950s.

I don’t go out to movie theaters very often, but my wife and I pay for HBO Max, Paramount+, Disney +, Showtime, and several other cable networks and streaming services with thousands of movies on them, so I should have ZERO problems finding movies to watch!

Like I’m planning on doing with my Listening Challenge, if necessary, I’ll raise my goal number for my Movie Challenge.

Throughout the year, I’ll share my reviews/thoughts on a lot of the albums and movies here on Medium.

So, how about you? Do you have any entertainment-related goals or plans for 2023?

If not, feel free to join me in mine! What’s the worst that could happen — you listen to a lot of music and watch a lot of movies?

That doesn’t sound so bad, does it?

Regardless, I hope you have a truly wonderful 2023! No matter what you do in the new year, I hope your happy moments far exceed your bad moments!
