That Time A Guy Made A Crazy Wedding Request
I was the photographer, and he asked me to make certain that all his family looked awful in the pictures
During my time as a wedding photographer, I received many of what may be termed “out there” requests, but this one always stood out to me just because of the sheer wackiness of it.
This guy reached out to me to enlist my services as a wedding photographer; he requested my half-day package, which is basically people arriving, the ceremony itself and the speeches. As per usual with this package, I arranged a meeting just to talk things over and make certain that everyone was on the same page.
So we meet for a coffee, the bride-to-be is with him, and after talking, it seemed a simple job. They claimed that they didn’t want anything special, just the basics. But then just as I am getting ready to leave, the soon-to-be husband, I will call him Fred, says can I speak to you for a moment alone — his fiancée at this point had gone to the bathroom, so it was just me and him.
I say yeah sure, what’s up. He then states the following:
“I have a bit of an odd request, a bit out there…”
“Go on,” I say, my intrigue piqued.
“I would really love it if you could make certain that all my family look terrible in the pictures.”
Now I’ve heard of people having problems with family before, but this request was most certainly unexpected. And at first I thought he was joking and so I just smile, but then he says: “I’m being deadly serious here, I know it seems crazy but there’s an extra couple of hundred pounds in it for you if you do so.”
At this point, I’m trying to work out whether he is trying to troll me or being legit, but before I can work it out his fiancée returns, he shakes my hand and tells me to think about it and then we go our separate ways.
I have to say at this point I’m unsure about what to do, do I really try to make his family look bad? I’ve had a request like this before, but it was the in-laws that the guy had wanted me to make look bad. I had declined the request and as a result, he had decided to get a different photographer. I didn’t wish a repeat because I needed the money and did not want to lose this job.
Anyhow, a week later I get a phone call from the bride-to-be, I will call her Carla, Carla says that she has a special request for me, immediately my heart sinks because I’m thinking what the hell is this couple asking for now. She tells me:
“It’s a bit out there but, if possible, could you make my family look bad in all the pictures. There is an extra couple of hundred pounds in it for you if you’re willing to. ”
This could not be happening, seriously? This was supposed to be an easy job. Yet to say the least at this point I’ve absolutely no idea what to think, both the bride-to-be and groom-to-be secretly requesting that I make their families look terrible in the pictures? Just what in the blue hell was going on here, were they trying to troll me, was this an elaborate prank? Or were they being deadly serious?
Turns out it was a prank and they were being deadly serious, but I was not the one being pranked, their requests were legit. To cut a long story short, the couple and their families turned out to be a group of practical jokers, and both Fred and Carla had thought it would be hilarious if all the pictures of their families looked terrible.
And when both Fred and Carla realised that they had both come up with the same prank, it seemed to make them love each other even more and so it was decided that everyone, themselves included, would be made to look bad in the photos. And just to add to the fun factor everyone would be in on the joke.
And so I spent half a day taking pictures of people taking great joy in trying to make themselves look as bad as they possibly could, funny faces, those awkward expressions that I would normally delete, they were the MO of the day. The best thing about it all, I got paid extra for the joy of doing this. A crazy world we live in. But then, a happy ending is a happy ending.
That’s all for me for today, thanks for reading!
