Thank “God”! I Became a Top Writer Because of a Boot Camp and a Community of Writers

Kristina God’s boot camp helped me become a top writer

I received this graphic in an email from Medium just 16 days into boot camp.

It all started with Zibby.

I joined Medium because Zibby Owens announced she was accepting essay submissions on her new publication Moms Don’t Have Time to Write.

I was thrilled when my article, “My Husband and I Can’t Seem to Break These Habits for Our Kids” was accepted.

After over a decade of self-publishing, I decided to concentrate my creative energy on Medium.

Over the first few months, I spent more time reading the work of others than I did on writing. I was slow to submit my work, primarily because I posted on my own site two or three times a month and it was a cadence I was comfortable with.

The path led me to New Writer’s Welcome.

New Writer’s Welcome published my fourth submission, “Dropping my Autistic Daughter Off at School On Her Birthday”.

It is on New Writer’s Welcome that I found a home base. I joined the Facebook group and began actively posting and interacting with other writers new to Medium. Not only did I gain great advice and learn about other pubs, I felt incredibly welcome — thank you, Robert Ralph.

Shortly after the New Year, Robert Ralph shared that Kristina God was offering a boot camp and he and Kristina had joined together to offer a New Writer’s Welcome writer the opportunity to win a scholarship to join the camp.

I didn’t submit an essay for the scholarship. Instead, I opened my wallet. I respect Robert and his genuine desire to help other writers and I saw Kristina’s name all over the platform. Plus, her last name is God. I was intrigued.

The story starts to get interesting at boot camp.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined the boot camp in February. Over the last month, alongside almost 20 other writers, I learned the ins and outs of Medium, from the basics, like how to set up a profile to a deep dive, like promoting my writing using Substack and SEO.

After following Kristina’s tips and testing out her suggestions, like writing every day and creating easy-to-read paragraphs — to name a few — my writing improved, my readership increased and I became a top writer in Parenting and Feminism.

I also became part of a community of smart, ambitious, caring, and highly engaged writers who are as interested in lifting up others as they are in being successful on Medium.

At the helm of the group is Kristina, who I found incredibly talented, ambitious, insightful, and helpful. Beyond helpful. I’m still astounded at the time, energy, and personal attention she gave to each of us.

The future is bright.

I am so excited as I look to the year ahead and grateful to be well-positioned to meet my goals because of the writers here who dedicate their effort to helping others.

A shout out to the February Alumni Crew!
