Texas Democrats Threatened with Jail
How GOP are desperate to suppress people of color and young voters voting rights
Around the country, Republicans are doing everything they can to secure the election in their favor, legally or illegally, right before the world’s eyes, and are sadly getting away with most of it. The Republicans are well aware they cannot win an election on their merits or policy, therefore suppressing the vote for people of color, and the young voters is their methodology. Integrity and honesty have a whole new meaning with the Republicans.
Texas has more voting restrictions than any other state and they are yet adding more anti-voting bills while the states are inundated with covid-19 and Delta Viruses as the Governor focuses on securing anti-voting bills. Last year, when the winter storms tore down powerlines that rendered many residents with no electricity, water, the necessities of life, and some even died in the midst of this disaster, the governor did nothing, as Ted Cruz left town with his family and got caught boarding the plane via the news media . This governor’s action bespeaks power for the GOP remaining in office or getting in office, at the detriment of the people. Texans are dying of Covid-19 while the governor fights against mandating mask-wearing. Now Texas hospitals are overfilled, as Texas seeks help from other states. Where is the logic in all this?
Texas Democrats had walked out avoiding a quorum for anti-voting bills passage, then the GOP scheduled another and the Democrats left the state and went to Washington seeking the passage of For the People Act, (S1 Bill), and the John Lewis Bill that would stop many of these anti-voting bills around the country.
After the Texas Democrats arrived in Washington, Texas Governor threatened to arrest them upon their return. Weeks passed and the Texas Democrats were not moved by his treat, now the speaker of the Texas House of Representatives has signed a civil arrest warrant for 52 absent Democrats, with the goal to force them to accept an atrocity to Democracy, controlling and/or denying the people of color their right to vote. The House voted 80 to 12 to force the protesting lawmakers to return.
This in and of itself, seem wrong in every way. African Americans standing up for the right to vote by not going along with the GOP and this Texas governor is their right to do so, otherwise we have a dictatorship. What is the point of having two parties, when one can dictate how the other can vote or take a stance?
Unimaginable how the Texas Supreme Court allowed the House to issue such a warrant for the Democrats to return to the chamber to secure a quorum. Texas is rotten to the core as the GOP sow seeds of division wider than the Mississippi River and thus far are getting away with such devious and suppression acts.
The GOP needs to wake up and smell the coffee this is a new day, and people of color are not going to stand by while they take away the people’s right to vote that many have died for. This latest stunt by the GOP will only add more flame to the fire and further divide the Texas House.
According to the LA Times, Rep. Chris Turner who chairs the Texas House Democratic Caucus, stated, that it was “fully within our rights as legislators to break quorum to protect our constituents and Texas House Democrats are committed to fighting with everything we have against Republicans’ attacks on our freedom to vote.”
While the majority of the GOP support suppressing the vote of people of color and young voters, one Republican voted against authorizing arrest warrants and has been openly critical of the elections bill. This brave soul cares about the people and democracy.
The GOP has labeled these democrats as fugitives. Fugitive is someone who is on the run they are not on the run. They are in Washington petitioning to get bills passed to counteract the GOP madness across the country. They shall not be moved is the mantra of these Democrats as they stand on what is right and are determined to fight to the end of getting bills passed in Washington.
Many of the Democrats are outside of Texas jurisdiction and can not and are out of the reach of the House sergeant-at-arms and state troopers. All this bespeaks the mindset of the GOP and their determination to rig the upcoming mid-term election.
Many large businesses and companies had taken opposition to the anti-voting bills in Georgia, Texas, Arizona, and other states, but were soft on their stance which did not deter the GOP and Texas Republicans but has put a strain between them.
57 Democrats have been camping out almost a month at the Capitol and demanding for the Biden Administration to step in with the passage of the S1 Bill and the John Lewis Bill. If they didn’t take this stance the GOP win by suppressing the right to vote for people of color and young voters.
To summarize their actions can be heard in the words of Rep. Eddie Rodriguez, an Austin Democrat, “We broke quorum because anti-voter bills are nefarious attempts to disenfranchise Texans & these authoritarian motions by Republicans just cement that we are on the right side of history.” “We must hold the line against these desperate attempts to destroy our democracy.”
Texas Governor Abbott called another session after the Democrats walked out of the first time session but got the shock of his life when the Democrats blocked his second session as they appeared at the Capitol allowing the world to see what the governor was and is trying to do and how wrong it is. The Governor declared he’d call session after session as long as necessary. Well, this says a lot about where his attention lies and it is certainly not on all the people being sickened with Covid-19 and the Delta virus. The Democrats claimed victory when they were able to stymie this special session as it expired.
The fight will continue and must counteract voting suppression. Nineteen Democrats who broke quorum appealed to the Travis Country court where District Judge Brad Urrutia signed an order to prevent arrests for 14 days.
The day after this order, Abbott appealed to the Texas Supreme Court to overturn that order, and the justices as expected did not hesitate to overturn the order.
While Abbott and the GOP presently need for a quorum, two-thirds of the 150 members on-site, have 96 House members and only need four more to be present.
the Democrats continue to labor and petition the Biden’s Administration and potential swing votes in the U.S. Senate for federal voting rights bills to put a stop to Texas and other states voting rights suppression laws and other racist activities.
Sometimes you have to listen to what a person says and does to gain an understanding of will intent. These are the words of Rep. Cecil Bell, a Republican, “They just need to put them all in handcuffs, drag them in, throw them in the middle of chambers, lock the doors and unhandcuff ’em. … A couple of them would go bug-eyed crazy.”
In conclusion, any decent American can readily see how wrong this is but the Republicans in hiding or coloring their ill will tell the public that they are doing this to boost election integrity and avert cheating. If this was true, there are many ways to prevent this from happening by adding more checks and balances around the voting processes and not suppressing voters right to vote. People must learn to think for themselves to see how wrong this is. Democracy is the backbone of this country and the right to vote is comprised within Democracy according to the Constitution that all men and women are supposed to be created equal.
