Taking Rights Away From People Makes You the Bad Guys

Period, full stop.

I am really tired of hearing about state legislatures passing bills that strip rights from trans folx, drag queens, women, BIPOC folks, and pretty much anyone who isn’t a straight white guy. It is clear to see that the Republican party in America has descended into full-on fascism at this point. Between the solid attempts at trans genocide, striking down Roe v Wade, and their unabashed hardons for murdering liberals and black people, I’m done.

You are the bad guys. You just are at this point. You have decided that banning and burning books is just dandy. You have declared whole subsets of people to be lesser and passed laws to that effect. For the love of all that is good, you have white supremacists and, I cannot stress this enough, literal Nazis as core members of your party. You have openly declared war on the left and encouraged your followers to commit violence and murder against liberals, minorities, and queer folx. You asked literal children what kind of guns they want to be shot with.

How can you look at all of these things and decide, “Nope, we’re fighting for the side of good and righteousness!”

Nobody has banned and burned books and been seen as the good guys. Nobody has ever decided that whole groups of people are not equal and have been seen as the good guys. Nobody has taken such steps to remove rights from entire groups of people and been seen as the good guys. Nobody has encouraged the deaths of entire subsets of the population and been seen as the good guys.

What makes you any different?

Is it because you think god is on your side? Well I have bad news for you, many atrocities have been committed in the name of god, or multiple gods, or no god, and they’re all still atrocities. Having god on your side won’t make your hands clean of the innocent blood that you are spilling. And, if god is really on your side, I’d rather burn in hell than worship such a cruel, unjust god.

How can you support such cruelties and injustice without a shred of self-awareness? How can you not look at the people whose lives will be negatively affected by your actions and the actions of those you support and feel shame? How can you watch your party and your legislators strip rights and humanity from your neighbors, your fellow human beings, and claim to be godly and righteous and pure?

How do you sleep at night? How do you live with the notion that through your actions, however indirectly, many people suffer and die every day? How can you look at yourselves and your party, watch your elected officials say cruel, vile, and hateful things against entire subsets of humanity, and not feel so disgusting?

How do you live with yourself?
