Summary

The provided text is the first chapter of a reflective and symbolic journey by author Warren Brown, exploring the metaphorical significance of trees and leaves in a writer's life and craft.

Abstract

In "Symbols and Illuminations on a Writer’s Journey- Chapter 1," Warren Brown embarks on a metaphorical exploration of the writing process, likening it to a journey that begins underfoot, much like the famous quote from Lao-Tzu. Drawing inspiration from nature, specifically the tree and its leaves, Brown reflects on the interconnectedness of life and writing, emphasizing the importance of deriving stories from one's surroundings. The chapter introduces the writer's personal history, beginning with his first poem at seventeen, and sets the stage for a series of contemplations on life, nature, and the art of storytelling. Brown uses the tree as a central symbol, representing growth, guidance, and the cyclical nature of life and creativity. He also touches on various themes, including the transformation of leaves and their nourishing role in the ecosystem, the guidance offered by a wooden signpost, and the whimsical notion of human-tree relationships. The narrative weaves through various scenarios, from the practical to the fantastical, and concludes with an invitation to readers and writers to join him on this symbolic journey of discovery and self-expression.

Symbols and Illuminations on a Writer’s Journey- Chapter 1

The Leaf and the Tree of Life

Cover provided by the Author, Warren Brown

It is time to take that first step as I walk the path of the Writer. I remember the famous quote attributed to the brilliant Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu, “A journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet.”

At the age of seventeen, I wrote my first poem, which was a result of my first crush. The first poem which I composed was “The Lady of the Sea”, and it was about the mysterious mermaid, a popular creature of myths and folklore. 🧜🏽‍♀️🧜🏻‍♀️

I will call this writing experience “The Writer’s Never-ending Story”, as it will only stop when I feel that it is time to do so sometime in the future. I am so excited at the start of this project and hope that you can also follow me on this pathway on the writer’s journey. I do hope that this article inspires you and other readers to take up the writing craft.

This story will feature my ideas and thought processes as well as my writings and references to the works of others who have influenced me in the past and those who are now part of my evolutionary journey as a writer.

Let the story begin. I am the faceless and unknown writer setting off on my writer’s journey. I am you and you are me, the writer walking into the unknown to discover and uncover all the illuminating and fascinating mysteries of life as we walk this path, expressing ourselves through our writings. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Symbol: Tree

There is a forest of trees close to the path on which I have taken. The autumn leaves still cover the path and the forest floor. Stepping on the wet leaves can be slippery. I look at the leaves which cover the pathway like a carpet of yellow, brown, and light green. 🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂

I squint my eyes and then I see the colored pathway of leaves extending out into the distance. The sun is just rising on the horizon. This is the right time to leave home to set off on this journey. Like the leaves of a tree, this journey will take me to different locations, situations as I encounter varieties of people, as well as fellow writers on this long, never-ending, and thrilling journey.

The leaves are like little pathways all bringing food, energy, and water to the tree. Every little leaf has been created to work for the tree.

Random Thoughts:

Leaves are of so many colors, they can be green in spring, yellow and brown in winter, yet they are still the leaves of a tree. Leaves transform over time, but they still serve their purpose till they fall off the tree. However, it does not end there, as the rotting leaves on the floor form rich nourishment for the trees.

Signpost: Wooden Sign

The Wooden Sign on the path with directions points me to the North, South, East, and West. I will take the road that goes north. Then I will move to the East, South, and West, till I finally return home.

The wood now serves the purpose of a guidepost, which shows me the directions I need to go. I am free to decide my path. The wood from the tree now has a fresh purpose in life, although it is now not a part of the tree. The wooden signpost has joined the world of man and woman, where it offers us directions like a compass in life. 🧭

Sexy Thoughts: Married to a Tree

Yes, there are also people who are married to trees, which seems like an odd arrangement. How can a tree offer love, comfort, and companionship? Perhaps these tree and human couples have a way of going around these hurdles in their tree-human marriages. 🌳🌳🌳🌳

I think now of the defenders of trees, those tree-huggers around the world, who defend and protect trees for humanity and the children of the future. I send out a salute to all the tree-huggers of the world who protect our trees.

Crime Scene: Murder at the Tree

As an author, I now think of the possible murder scenarios around the tree.

A woodcutter is found dead at the roots of the tree, with a tree branch piercing his heart.

A woman is found hanging from the branch of a tree, as a large puddle of ice-cold water is found just below her.

Humor Mind: The Tree that came to Tea

The man was waiting for the tree to come to tea. It was his grandson Roland, who was going to visit him for tea, dressed as a tree, as he was on his way to the school play, where he was the talking tree.

Mystery Eyes: The Tea-leaf reader

The old fortune-teller looked at the tea leaves in the man’s cup. The leaves had a story to tell. The leaves told her that the man who sat in front of her was someone she knew well. It was the one person who was the world to her and who she was forced to give away when he was born. It was her only son.

Poetically Speaking:

“Every leaf on a tree,

Reveals the Divine mystery.

We are all leaves on a tree,

Bound together in our humanity.”

Writer’s Insight:

As you will notice, I have used the symbol of a leaf to create different stories. A writer needs to look around his or her world for stories waiting to be told.

At the End of the Day

This is the first step taken by the writer on his journey. This is an important first step as it lays out a pattern for the journey, which the writer must go on as he or she discovers who they are as writers.

The purpose of this writer’s journey on the pathway of life is for him or her to discover their aims, purpose, and objectives as a writer.

Is the writer doing his or her work to make positive changes in society or are they writing to transform themselves as individuals in society?
