Support Our Ukrainian Writers
Donate directly to their accounts on their profile pages.
Like so many people shocked by Putin’s war crimes, I’m doing what I can to support Ukraine. If you’ve followed any of my articles, you know I urge readers to support Ukrainian craft designers through their Ravelry.com and Etsy.com accounts. These designers can receive donations of money in their digital download accounts, whether or not you use their patterns.
The recipients of your generosity have posted messages of gratitude for this money, so we know it is getting through to them.
I’ve read on social media that craft groups and other people are also promoting this idea.
Today I want to promote another way of supporting individuals.
This week I read an article by a Ukrainian Medium writer about her harrowing trip to escape the bombing of her city, Mariupol. She, like so many innocent victims of this cruel war, told the story of her flight from that besieged city with just a few possessions. This, after weeks of sheltering in a basement while her city was under constant shelling.
You can read her courageous yet heartbreaking tale here.
At the end of her article, she posted a request for donations to her Paypal account. I immediately complied.
Supporting knitting designers through Ravelry is easy for me because I check out patterns on that site daily. But for those of you who find it cumbersome, I urge you to look for Ukrainian writers on Medium who have Paypal accounts and support them with a donation if you can.
We are always asked to support one another by reading and clapping each other’s work. I don’t know if Ukraine is part of the Stripe universe, so I don’t know if Medium’s Ukrainian writers get paid for their articles.
We need to read their work in any case to learn of their hardships and courage.
I certainly don’t have to lecture anyone on this platform about the state of affairs in Ukraine. Nor, do I have to lecture you on the need for international support.
I just want to alert those of you who, like me, were unaware of our own writers who were making pleas for help and posting their Paypal links.
I don’t doubt anyone’s generosity or willingness to help. But in case you are unaware of how easy it is to slip a dime or two into the pocket of one of Medium’s Ukrainian writers, look for their profiles and click on their emails. See if they link to Paypal.
When you’ve lost everything but your life, I’m sure even the price of a cup of coffee can seem like a fortune.
Thank you for reading, and Glory to Ukraine.
