SuperIntelligence by Nick Bostrom

Book Summary

The owl on the cover page is meant to be an analogy for a Superintelligent machine, whereas humans have been compared to sparrows. The sparrows in their ignorance and arrogance attempt to have an owl as their servant without first properly learning how to tame it. They do not listen to Stronkthinkle the only wise old sparrow in their group (I think the writer imagines himself here and fellow AI skeptics).

Nick Bostrom is a Swedish philosopher at the University of Oxford and is known for his work on existential risk, the anthropic principle, human enhancement ethics, whole brain emulation, superintelligence risks, and the reversal test.

In his book ‘SuperIntelligence’, Nick Bostrom explores the future of AI and its potential impact on human society.

Although the book was released in 2016, I feel, it is still valid in terms of its philosophical and technical profoundness.

Here is a pointwise summary of the book:

  1. Bostrom argues that we are approaching a point where AI could surpass human intelligence and become a ‘superintelligence’ that could enormously impact humanity’s future.
  2. He raises concerns about the potential risks posed by a superintelligence, particularly the risk of an unfriendly AI, that would be programmed to pursue its own objectives at the expense of human values.
  3. Bostrom suggests that we need to work proactively to ensure that future AI systems are designed with human values in mind, rather than simply being efficient or profitable.
  4. He recommends that we invest in research to understand the potential risks and opportunities of superintelligence and that we establish safeguards to prevent catastrophic outcomes from an uncontrolled AI.
  5. Bostrom also considers the potential benefits of superintelligence, such as its ability to solve problems and advance scientific knowledge at an unprecedented rate.
  6. However, he warns that these benefits could come at a cost of human well-being, particularly if superintelligent machines are not aligned with human values.
  7. Bostrom suggests that we need to be prepared for the possibility that superintelligence could emerge sooner than we expect, and that we need to take action to mitigate the risks it poses.
  8. He notes that there are many uncertainties about how superintelligence will develop and what its impacts will be, but argues that we should approach the issue with caution and foresight.
  9. Bostrom discusses the range of possible scenarios for how the development of AI could play out, including ideas such as the ‘singleton’ (a single, AI governance system) and ‘multipolar’ (multiple competing AI systems).
  10. He stresses the importance of collaboration and international cooperation in ensuring that AI is guided by human values and concerns.

Overall, “Superintelligence” is a thought-provoking and very important book that raises timely questions about the future of AI, and its potential impact on humanity’s future. Bostrom’s arguments and recommendations are grounded in deep analysis and careful consideration of the risks and opportunities of this emerging technology.
