PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Sunshine and Roses

Week 162 of the photographic documentary of my daily life

This year, we got more sunshine at the end of summer than we did during the entire month of August. But how does the saying go? Better late than never.

And here we go.

This week I got for you some sunset beauty, skydiving adventures, blooming roses, and a hike in the Alps. Yes, the week was packed.

Thursday, we finished working but one more load filled with licensed skydivers went up, and together with a friend, I decided to walk to the landing area and watch the sunset as the parachutes open. It had been a clear day with no clouds and the sun set perfectly between two wind turbines and behind a tiny farm village.

When the skydivers came in for landing, the sun had disappeared but left the actors creating stunning silhouettes in front of an orange backdrop. The sunset sky.

On Friday, one of my colleagues asked me to do a tandem skydive with one of her friends. Of course, I will. That’s my job after all. Another friend came with me to film the fun and I also had a camera wristed on my hand. The girl closed her eyes as we moved to the door of the plane but said she opened them as soon as we were in the sky.

Skydivers are a great community, and I made this year many new friends at this airport. One of them is a girl who didn’t jump for a while due to non-skydiving-related injuries but wanted to get back into the sky.

I did a refresher training with her on Friday afternoon and took her on a supervision jump on Saturday morning. She had to perform a few skills and then I flew to her and grabbed her hands as she completed everything already and we still had some altitude left. She grabbed my arms and looked me in the eyes with the biggest smile.

In case you’re wondering why I do this job. For those smiles. They are priceless.

On Sunday, we drove to my parents and I didn’t take another picture, but the one of this yellow rose my mom had put on my table. I didn’t even take a second shot and only realized now the flower head wasn’t even in focus.

On Monday, we did some visits to the authorities, fetched our new IDs, and I fixed one of David’s working pants with my grandma’s sewing machine. The one I inherited.

I’m thinking of you, grandma. I know, I’m still far from good at sewing but I’m trying my best. I should have let you teach me more while you were still here…

On Monday evening, we got the message work was canceled for Wednesday due to bad weather predictions, and when we said then we’d stay a day longer at my parent’s place, my dad suggested we’d go hiking on Tuesday.

And so we did. The Alps are just a 2-hour drive away from them, and we had a day filled with blue skies and sunshine. Enjoying lunch at a mountain cottage with such breathtaking views is always worth a day trip.

Wednesday, waking up a bit sore from the hike, we packed up and headed home again. It wasn’t raining when we got back, but the clouds were covering the sky, and we could see a downpour or two in the distance on the horizon.
