“I mean,” said Thalara, cradling a moogan tea, “it’s not that bad to live on a planet with three suns, right?”
The one-eyed bartender grunted: “Mmmh.”
“Yeah,” Thalara continued, staring out towards the narrow windows of the bar. “I always thought it was kinda beautiful. At least in theory. I said so to Maris, of course, and… she nodded.”
“Mmmh.”
“I mean, should I have taken that as a ‘no’? It was quite a hesitant nod. But we were newly in love. The Battle of Jakku was long past, and we’d served our time, you see?”
“Mmmh…?”
Thalara patted an insignia on her jacket. “In the New Republic Defense Force, I mean. Our final tour of duty. We had to find somewhere to settle down, right? To raise a family, have a home, all that. My homeworld was a bust, so… On balance, it was definitely the right choice.” Thalara fell silent for a moment, sipping at the drink and considering the devastation of her home planet.
The bartender wiped the counter yet again, though the flies that circled didn’t leave any visible traces. He then folded his arms once more, his one eye half closed.
“I also knew there were foundlings in the caves of Moorjhone,” mused Thalara. “We wanted to raise a family.”
At this, the barman frowned, and looked out towards the blistering conditions beyond the door.
“Don’t get me wrong,” Thalara continued. “I knew that the people here lived mainly in caves. But I… I mean, I just…” Her face fell for a moment, and then she turned, leaning back against the bar and raising her arms. “I just didn’t quite believe how hard it would be to spend any time outside. I mean, you know…? Those early visions I had of gazing wistfully into the triplet sunset, cradling my beloved in my arms.”
At this, the bartender gave a long rattling sigh, then picked up his cloth once more.
“Yeah.” Thalara finished her drink then pushed the empty mug away, her shoulders slumping, She stood back, and wafted a few flies away from her face. “Well, back to working for fuel money. Might even get off this planet before the day of three suns.”
