Writing Prompt — May the Fourth Be With You
Celebrate Star Wars Day all month with these writing prompts
I’ve never been a huge fan of the holidays that feel like shameless cash grabs. See the following:
Valentine’s Day: make sure your loved one feels extra special (nevermind the other 364 days of the year).
Halloween: refer to the iconic movie Mean Girls… “in girl world, Halloween is the one night of the year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it” (and before you send me angry messages, this applies to gay men, too).
Or Cyber Monday, because my wallet isn’t done crying from Black Friday.
There, I’ve said it.
Yet there is something magical about Star Wars Day. Originally from the pun “May the Fourth be with you,” it has no official commencement year, growing organically from the fans and embraced by the creators of the beloved franchise.
Regardless of which side of the fandom you sit on, this month, we invite you to celebrate Star Wars Day using the writing prompts below.
Note: we are not restricting you to the science fiction setting or genre. More than anything, we are looking for stories inspired by the themes found within Star Wars: the battle of light vs. dark, the discovery of mystical forces unknown, the pain of heartbreak, and the promise of hope.
- Start your story with a character or narrator saying, “Let go of your hate.”
- Write about a character who goes into stasis for decades… or centuries.
- Write a story from the POV of a droid.
- Set your story on a planet where the sun never sets.
- Write about a character who learns a disturbing truth about their family.
- Write about a force no one can see.
- Write an enemies-to-lovers story.
- Write a story about rebels rising against an oppressive government.
- Start your story with a ship jumping to lightspeed.
- Write about a character who lives on a desert planet.
- Write about a wedding interrupted by an alien invasion.
- Write about a character who imposes their own exile.
- Write a story that includes the phrase, “Never tell me the odds.”
- End your story with the promise of hope.
