Successful Surgery for Dog Without Legs

When Monika was rescued in the Russian village where volunteers found her without her paws, veterinarians were not optimistic about her chances of survival, even recommending she be put down.
Monika was assumed to be the victim of abuse. After her rescue, she was taken to Krasnodar in southern Russia, where she was put under the care of Marina Gapich and Alla Leonkina. Monika went into surgery to have what remained of her legs amputated. She also received a blood transfusion.
Gapich and Leonkina, the two women in charge of Monika’s care, rejected the veterinarian’s advice that the dog should be euthanized to end its suffering. Instead, they raised over $5,000 and contacted Sergie Gorshkov, a veterinarian specializing in the new field of animal prosthetics.
Monika was fitted for her new prosthetic legs, which were then built using a 3D printer. Gorshkov was cautious about having high expectations after the surgery but was happily surprised by Monika’s quick recovery and adaptation to her new legs.
…On the third day she started standing up and walking around the clinic, going from room to room.
-Sergie Gorshkov to CNN
Monika’s age is guessed to be between two and four years old, and she now has the possibility of a long life with the help of her new titanium legs. However, she is not fully recovered from her surgery two weeks ago, still weak and tired. Over time, it is expected that Monika’s bones will grow to fit her new legs, making the connection more comfortable.
Monika and her caretakers are grateful to those who donated online for her surgery. Monika has traveled many miles throughout Russia, and her next stop might be England. Her caretakers are looking into sending her there for continued therapy.
