Strategies To Cope With Perpetual Rejections
#1. It’s not a rejection of me as a person

The average job seeker needs to apply to around 60–100 jobs to receive a single job offer according to a 2018 Survey by TalentWorks.
For me, receiving rejection emails has become a routine morning ritual, a bitter cup of reality served alongside my coffee. The sting of each rejection lingers, refusing to diminish, particularly when it’s from a company or an opportunity I passionately coveted. Yet, in the face of this recurring disappointment, I’ve adopted pragmatic coping strategies that soften the blows. Here are some of my key insights that help me handle rejections with grace:
1. It’s crucial to separate the Professional from the Personal and remind myself that a rejection is not a dismissal of who I am as a person. The rejection is an outcome of specific circumstances, preferences, or requirements that might not align with my profile or aspirations. By detaching my personal worth from the rejection, I can approach it with a clearer mindset.
2. Rejections are not dead-ends; they are detours on the journey toward success. Adopting a growth mindset allows me to view rejections as opportunities for learning and improvement. Each setback becomes a chance to refine my skills, enhance my application strategies, and adapt to the dynamics of opportunities.
3. Sharing the burden of rejection with a supportive network can provide invaluable solace. Whether it’s friends, mentors, or fellow applicants, discussing experiences and seeking advice fosters a sense of community. I usually tweet about mine or write about my experience with certain companies. Knowing that others have faced similar challenges and triumphed can be a source of inspiration and encouragement.
4. After the initial disappointment subsides, reflection is a powerful tool. Analyse the rejection objectively. This allows me to identify potential areas for improvement. Whether it’s refining my resume, enhancing interview skills, or acquiring new qualifications, this reflective process is integral to adapting and evolving.
When faced with perpetual rejections, cultivating resilience and adopting these strategies has helped transform my narrative. Rather than succumbing to the weight of disappointment, I find strength in the continuous pursuit of growth, adaptation, and the unwavering belief that the right opportunity is on the horizon. Don’t give up!
