Summary

The author of the article has encountered an undisclosed daily limit on Medium for publishing comments, which are treated as stories, leading to frustration and a lack of clear communication from Medium's support.

Abstract

The article titled "STOP! You’ve Exceeded Your Daily Comment Limit" discusses an unexpected issue faced by Medium users where they are unable to post comments after reaching a certain threshold within a day. The author, after engaging in a burst of commenting, discovered that their comments were being saved as drafts instead of posting, with no prior warning. This limit, which the author believes is not well-documented, affects the user experience negatively, especially for those who actively engage with content by commenting. The article also notes that Medium's customer support initially did not provide a clear answer to the query, although an update indicates that Medium eventually responded with an explanation. The author seeks to raise awareness about this issue and invites others to share their experiences.

Opinions

  • The author finds the undisclosed comment limit on Medium to be an unnecessary hindrance, especially since comments are considered equivalent to stories.
  • There is a preference expressed for moderation in the frequency of articles published by authors, with a personal limit of nine articles a day.
  • The author is critical of the lack of warning before comments are diverted to draft status due to the undisclosed limit.
  • Frustration is evident over the lack of immediate clarity and communication from Medium regarding this issue, as well as the difficulty in finding information about it through searches on Medium.
  • The author updates the article to reflect that Medium eventually provided a response, but the specifics of the response are to be found in a linked follow-up article.
  • There is an invitation for readers to subscribe to the author's Medium page to not miss out on their content, despite the potential temporary inability to comment.

STOP! You’ve Exceeded Your Daily Comment Limit

There’s a secret limit that some Medium members bump up against. Have you been affected by it?

Does Medium have an undisclosed policy limiting how many stories you can publish in a single day?

Or is it posted somewhere, and I just haven’t found it?

A limit would be fine if it applied only to articles. I appreciate my favorite authors, but that doesn’t mean I want to read ten articles a day from them. Nine is my personal limit.

Because Medium considers comments to be stories, however, a person who is generously interacting with other writers risks finding their enthusiasm most definitely curbed.

It’s happened to me a few times, including yesterday. After a flurry of reading and commenting, I noticed that my comments were no longer posting when I clicked the SUBMIT button.

Instead, the comment goes into a kind of purgatory, saved as a draft story on your stories page. What? Why???

I don't get any warning when this occurs. Like this one:

Have you ever seen this message?

In my exhaustive research (well, I did a couple of searches on Medium, but it felt exhausting to me), I’ve found only a few references to people suffering similar problems.

Help! I’m in Medium Jail got 1.2K views and over 20 comments, but no one had any answers.

Medium hasn’t answered my query. I’ll let you know if they do. UPDATE: Medium answered! See here for the deets.

In the meantime, do you know what’s going on? Has it happened to you?

Be well.

Even if you are temporarily deprived of my great comments, you can ensure you never miss great stories like this.
