STOP Searching For Your Passion
Chasing your passion feels like the holy grail of life, doesn’t it? From the time we’re little, people ask us “What are you passionate about?” As if there’s one magical thing we’re meant to do.
Here’s the deal though — searching for one singular passion can make us absolutely miserable. I learned this the hard way in my 20s, when I was anxious and depressed trying to “find myself.” I want to share what I wish someone told me back then.
See, we think passion will look like a lightning bolt, right? That A-ha! moment that reveals our destiny. But passion isn’t something you find — it’s something you nurture. It comes from engaging fully in the journey, not obsessing over the destination.
I know this is different from what we normally hear about passion. But stick with me! By the end, you’ll see why the search for passion might be totally misguided.
Passion Morphs and Evolves
Here’s a tricky truth: passion is not constant. It changes as we do!
For example, 10 year-old me was positive my passion was to be a cricketer (i still have passion for this). By 15, I had moved on to dreams of Broadway stardom. Now, my newest passion is writing of course.
The point is, our interests evolve a ton, especially when we’re young. So why do we insist passion should be permanent? We wouldn’t expect a middle school relationship to last for life. So why expect passions to never change?
Instead of thinking “What is my one true passion?” try asking “What energizes me right now?” Give yourself room to explore new interests over time. Passion comes and goes. It’s more of a journey than a destination.
Passion Needs Heat to Ignite
There’s this idea that we need to find our passion before taking action. That we can’t start a career or pursue hobbies until that magical spark hits.
But think of passion like a campfire. It needs kindling, logs, and matches to ignite — not the other way around!
For me, writing sparked a passion only through showing up daily. Same with playing guitar. I had to put in the time before it lit me up.
Passion requires doing, trying, showing up — not waiting around to be struck. Give your all to whatever is in front of you, and passion will come. Keep trying new things until you find what sparks joy.
Passion Comes from Contribution
I used to think passion was all about self-fulfillment. Finding what I loved and gave me joy.
But over time, I’ve come to see passion ignites when we contribute to others. When we create value in people’s lives.
A passion for cooking may begin by experimenting with recipes. But it grows through feeding people delicious meals. A medical career starts as book learning, but becomes a passion through healing others.
Passion is not selfish. It grows when our skills and energy meet the world’s needs. We all have gifts to contribute! Keep trying new ways of serving, and you’ll uncover passion.
Don’t Limit Yourself to Passion Alone
Now, passion is great when you find it! But making it the sole criteria for decisions can really limit you.
I’ve turned down opportunities because I didn’t feel a spark right away. But looking back, that “follow your passion” advice kept me from growing.
Sometimes, a great job or relationship starts with simply showing up. With an open mind and heart, not a lightning bolt. Amazing things can unfold when you walk through doors without knowing where they lead.
My advice? Say yes more often. Be open to new experiences, even if you don’t feel instant passion. You might uncover something that lights you up down the road!
