Get Motivated (Even When You Don’t Want To!)

Motivation. Pffft. Borrrring, am I right? Just hearing that word makes me want to fall asleep on my textbook!
But hey, motivation is pretty important if we actually want to get stuff done. Like that monster 5-page essay Mr. Johnson assigned that’s due next week. Ugh. Even thinking about it makes me want to hide under my covers.
I feel you, bro (or sis!). Essays are thee wurst. But we don’t have to tackle them alone! I wanted to chat about some sneaky little motivation tricks I’ve picked up over the years. These babies have helped me write some killer essays…even when I reeeeally wasn’t in the mood.
So if you’re dragging your feet on starting assignments (guilty!), or you just can’t get pumped up enough to clean your disgusting locker (also guilty!), stick with me for a hot sec. Imma break down my best motivation boosting secrets:
Let’s gab about what motivation even is
I know, I know — boring textbook stuff, amirite? But hang tight, I promise this will be quick.
Basically, motivation is just the fuel that revs up your engine to get stuff done. Kinda like how coffee or an energy drink pumps you up. But for your brain instead of your body!
There’s two main types that work together to keep you truckin’ along. Intrinsic motivation comes from within you — like when you geeeek out about a subject you love and could talk about it all day. Extrinsic is external motivation — like wanting to get paid, win an award, or impress your crush.
Both are useful tools in your motivation toolbox. But researchers have found that when we’re overly dependent on extrinsic and neglect intrinsic…that’s when we start to flake out on goals.
Alright, alright. Enough jibber jabber. You want them sweet motivation hacks!
Well bucko, you came to the right place. Check out these 8 simple — but super effective — ways to get your mojo going when you’d rather be scrolling TikTok:
1: Psyche yourself up
Your brain can be a sneaky saboteur when it comes to motivation. If it starts whining “I can’t do this” or “I suck at writing essays!” that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
So flatter yourself a little! Hype yourself up like you’re about to run out on the basketball court for the championship game. Give your brain a little pep talk. “I got this paper in the bag!” or “This closet isn’t ready for the EPIC cleaning its about to get!”
It sounds silly but it works wonders!
2 Break it down Samuel L. Jackson style
Remember that infamous Ezekiel 25:17 Bible verse Sam Jackson quotes in Pulp Fiction? Echo his intensity: “Let there be motivation!” Just maybe don’t pull out a weapon while studying. Probably frowned upon.
For real though, stop focusing on the overwhelming big picture. Break that monster assignment down into bite-size baby steps instead. “Right now I’m just going to research some books in the library.” Easy breezy motivation squeezy!
3: Make a motivational vision board
I used to roll my eyes hard at vision boards. Sooo cheesy, right?! Then one day I actually tried making a board with photos representing why I want to become the first woman president. And yo…it low-key works??
Whenever my campaign manager duties feel boring, looking at my vision board gets me all inspired and fired up again!
So grab some magazines and make a vision board for whatever goal you’re going after right now. Having a visual representation helps motivate big time!
4: Bribe yourself (hey, no judging!)
Stick a yummy treat in the fridge — one you can only eat after you finish that task you’ve been avoiding. Dangle that motivational carrot, baby!
Or put $5 in a motivation jar every time you successfully work out or practice guitar without whining. After a month, treat yo’self to a movie night or some new tunes with your cash stash.
Small bribes — even silly ones — give your lagging motivation the oomph it needs some days!
5: Become an undercover spy
This tip might sound totally random but hear me out. Pretend you’ve been assigned a secret spy mission to infiltrate the evil villain’s lair. Your mission? Finish plotting the essay outline before he returns. Dun dun dunnnn!
Adding a little dramatic flair and storytelling to boring tasks helps spice things up. It gives your imagination something intriguing to chew on while plowing through the work. Give it a whirl — and let me know if you discover your inner James Bond along the way!
6: Jam out while you work
You know that moment when your fave pump-up song comes on the radio? And suddenly you feel ready to sprint up Mount Everest or ask your crush to dance?! Music has maaad motivational powers.
Put together a custom motivation mix filled with songs that spark joy and hustle. Let those upbeat jams blast while you write, clean, exercise, or work on anything that feels meh. It’ll crank your mood up to 11 real quick!
7: Imagination Vacation
When you feel totally drained and unmotivated, it’s time to let your mind escape on a mini vacay. Close your eyes and picture yourself accomplishing your goal.
Really imagine the sounds/smells/feels. Celebrate crossing the essay finish line after all your hard work. Envision a sparkling clean room that Marie Kondo would weep over. Those mental movies are like a little oasis for your inspiration and motivation.
8: Chat up your Champions
You know those uber inspiring movie moments where the coach or mentor gives an epic motivational speech? Well, you already have real life champions in your corner ready to give you that rallying motivational boost!
Next time you really don’t wanna study, discreetly text your BFF something like: “Feeling totally unmotivated for this test!” And watch them send back a stream of cheering texts and funny memes to nudge you along.
And so on with a few more motivational hacks, Let me know if you’d like me to continue building out more of the content in this style. I tried integrating more humor. Please provide any feedback on things to refine or expand. Happy to keep tailoring it!
