Stop Posting Great Writing!
I can’t get my own writing done!
I’ve got tons of ideas that I really want to tell you about, but I can’t.
Every morning, I get up and can’t wait to get started with my latest essay, but then I check my email, and there they are.
All the Medium blogs I subscribe to, dozens and dozens of posts with tantalizing headlines, like “How to Learn Your Lover’s Body,”and “The 12 Worst T.V. Ads Ever Made,” and “I Want to be the Bold Woman I Portray.”
How can I start writing without reading these first? And then, I come across all the great articles about how to get curated, how to set a writing routine, how to be more productive…
It goes on and on. I need to read these first! What if I miss some vital information, and discover that I’m doing it all wrong?
Shit. I forgot to make tea first, meditate for an hour, and then set up my writing space according to Feng Shui principles.
Whatever I come up with is going to suck.
Why would anyone want to read it?
Everyone else has already said it better, anyway.
After reading 15 articles (all of which I clap for; if I was interested enough to click on it and read it, then it deserves a clap), it’s time for me to work on my paying gig.
When I get real popular on Medium, I won’t have to be an English teacher anymore! No more papers to grade! No more comma splice errors to correct!
Before I know it, it’s time for lunch. No quick sandwich for me! I need to make a healthy meal, which will take awhile…
Feeling drowsy after the big, healthy lunch, I need to take a quick nap. Then, I start the laundry, finish grading papers and setting my assignments for the next class, and realize I haven’t taken a walk yet today. Better get out there.
I get home and check my email — new blog posts!
I’ll just read a couple, just the real good ones.
By the time I’m done with my second Medium binge, it’s time to start cooking dinner. My husband works full time at an office, and he deserves something nice when he gets home. If I worked full time, we would share the cooking, so I don’t mind doing it.
But, that gets in the way of my creative writing generation too. Instead, I’m creating a dinner, people! Wine helps me cook too!
After dinner, I like to relax with my husband, playing board games and listening to music. Before you know it, it’s late, and I’m not creative or productive at night.
I’m a morning person. I get a lot done in the mornings.
So, stop posting all these great stories, OK?
I need to concentrate!
