Stop Feeling Guilty About Not Working Hard

Your boss does not care about you or your well-being

Let me repeat that for those in the back: YOUR BOSS DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR WELLBEING!

They don’t. At all. You know how I know this all too well? I lost my dad 10 years ago because he passed away from stress-induced problems from working too hard for his job. There were other outside factors contributing to his stress, but his needing to relocate to a different state away from his family was definitely the biggest one.

How else do I know? I just endured the most emotionally abusive, power-hungry, incompetent boss at my previous job. I was there for only 5 months but couldn’t do it anymore, so I quit. I’ve felt my pulse slow down since leaving, I’ve felt my happiness levels increase, and I’ve felt more at peace knowing I don’t have to put up with him. It helps that I also blocked him on LinkedIn and Facebook.

If you’re working too hard because you love your job, don’t let me stop you. But if you’re working too hard because you think climbing the corporate ladder and earning more money will make you happier, I encourage you to do some deep soul-searching.

After losing my dad unexpectedly, I value my time here on Earth more than most people I know. If I want to take a long walk during my lunch break, I will. If I want to do a workout in the middle of the day, I will. If I want to meal prep or clean the house during a zoom meeting that I might not need to be listening to, I do.

Best of all, if I want to write here on Medium after I’ve completed my work for the day even if it’s 11 am, I do. Without feeling guilty. Because you know what? I’d rather write here on Medium during my work day than later on at night when my energy is zapped and I’m wanting to relax. I’d rather write here on Medium while I’m working because fuck it, I don’t care. I honestly don’t.

Plus, I know that if I mix in what brings me real happiness during my day while I am stuck “at work”, I’m actually a better worker. My boss should understand that, but that’s not what the core philosophy of capitalism and work is all about. They just want your energy spent during the time they get you for, nothing else.

So if you’re in an office job environment and you don’t feel like working? Go ahead and do what you want to do during work. If you have a deadline, meet it, and then do what you want. You’ve earned it!

That’s one of the best parts about working from home, more freedom to do what you want. ❤
