Free Will or Not?

V5.2 MidJourney AI

Some people say humans have no actual free will or choice and explain their position in various ways. For my part, I consider that we do in fact have free will and the choices we make every moment shape our reality. So, let me explain.

First, I consider there is nothing for each individuated one of us but a present moment and in that moment we have a multitude of options to choose. We can do whatever our body is capable of such as sit, remain sitting, stand, walk, smile, think about our regrets or hopes or successes. We can literally choose what to give our attention to such as our hurts, problems, sorrows, projects, good times, or nothing at all. We actually have the power (if we so choose) to be raptly attentive in the present moment with no self-talk chattering on and on.

Second, I consider that every choice we make each present moment is what steers our trajectory, that is, each present moment consecutive choice shapes the path we experience, creating our reality.

In the context of the premise I have set here, I suggest that the more conscious we are of the present moment and of our own consciousness, and the less entrenched we are in habitual thoughts, actions, and triggered reactions, then the more optimal our choices will be toward a present reality where we have a sense of well-being, capability, and wholeness. In fact, I surmise that what we predominantly give our attention to is what we experience. Pretty simple really.
