Steal This Letter! Ask Local Electeds to Demand a Ceasefire
Let Biden know it’s time for peace on earth
Is a ceasefire on your holiday wish list? I strongly feel it should be because, with unwavering support from the U.S. Government, Israel has killed over 19,000 Palestinians since October 7.
Christmas has been canceled in Bethlehem, in solidarity with the people of Gaza.
Will you take time out from your holiday shopping to help bring Peace On Earth?
Our protests, calls, and letters to The White House and Congress have fallen on deaf ears. Many have begun asking city councils and school boards to call for a ceasefire.
Those calling for cease-fire resolutions believe that this time, a critical mass of local gestures may ultimately convey to the White House that it has lost support for backing Israel’s military campaign. Especially if the resolutions come from Democratic strongholds that serve as President Biden’s base. —Shawn Hubler and Heather Knight, The New York Times, December 8, 2023
At this evolution point for humanity, we all have a choice. Do we stay comfortable with injustice or begin co-creating the future we all need?
Has Your City Council or School Board Passed a Resolution Yet?
If not, look up their next scheduled meeting and gather a group to speak during public comment. (View public comments from the December 12, 2023, Santa Cruz City Council meeting at the start of this video.)
Then copy this letter including the link to the Oakland, California ceasefire resolution, edit it for your electeds, and replace my thoughts with yours. (I began this letter with text copied from here.)
Dear Santa Cruz City Council,
I’m a registered voter in Santa Cruz Santa Cruz County. I have two children who attend school in the City of Santa Cruz. I spend most of my dollars here to help local merchants. As a mother, I am particularly appealing to those of you who are parents and grandparents to defend our children’s shared future.
We are witnessing the moral bankruptcy of the United States. The thin veil that once covered our white supremacist systems has been shredded. Biden and Congress are profiting off of the genocide of the Palestinian people. They amplify Israeli propaganda that dehumanizes Palestinians to justify fascist ethno-nationalism.
You have an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Oakland City Council by advocating for “the safety, dignity, freedom, and equality of all people, regardless of religion, race, or nationality”.
Calling for a Ceasefire is not antisemitic. It’s the antiracist and morally correct thing to do.
I ask that you unite our community in a life-affirming stand against hate and violence by:
- Drafting, agendizing, and passing a resolution closely modeled off the Oakland, CA resolution.
- Updating the text to reflect the 19,000 people killed in Gaza.
- Centering the call for a permanent and immediate ceasefire and unrestricted entry of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
- Avoiding changes that dehumanize the Palestinian people in any way.
I will continue to stand against genocide and ask that you represent me in sending this clear mandate for peace to higher levels of office.
