Success Leaves Clues — Learn while you earn on Medium

There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth… not going all the way and not starting — Buddha
Struggling to find momentum on Medium?
You’re not alone.
But let me share a little secret.
You can create content about multiple topics.
Insider tip: The most profitable posts are the ones that stroke Medium’s fragile ego (The first rule about Medium Club is tawk about Medium Club).
Not a tawker? You can write about whatever topic or niche you wish.
Looking for ultimate freedom? Embrace the idea that you are the niche like Dan Koe (YouTuber & author).
I’m currently reading The Million Dollar Weekend by Noah Kagan.
Want to know his claim to fame?
Long story short: He knows his stuff after creating eight million-dollar businesses.
Better still, he distilled his expertise into a three-step process you can apply to writing on Medium.
- Find a problem people are having that you can solve.
- Craft an irresistible solution whose million-dollar-plus potential is backed by simple market research (read other people’s posts)
- Spend NO MONEY to quickly validate whether your idea is the real deal (or not) by consistently publishing content (you’ll need to pay for membership to earn money on here).
Disclaimer: I changed the third step above to apply to creating content, but the book states: “By Preselling a product before you build it.”
Want social proof these steps work?
- Michael Osborn created a $83,000 consulting business
- Jennifer Jones launched a $20,000-a-year side hustle
- Daniel Reifenberger made $250,000 a year as a tutoring
- Ellie Kingswell made $213,37 on Medium in less than 8 weeks (& counting)
Good to know: Noah’s noticed more broken dreams than success stories.
Why did so many people fail? Failure to launch! 90% of hopefuls that sign up for online courses can’t drag themselves away from Netflix.
While most of his students ate pizza & binge-watched Stranger Things or Wednesday, Micheal, Jennifer, Daniel & Ellie were getting shit done.
They were action-takers. And yes, they had the same fears and doubts as everyone else (especially Ellie, who still second-guesses most of her posts).
Can you fail on Medium? Sure! Most of your posts will flop. So what? You’re in the biz to create content now! (not mindlessly consume it).
Business is simple!
It can be broken down into people, products and processes.
On Medium, you are a one-person business (so simplify it).
Think of Medium as content creation, followers and processes.
- Create compelling stories for your followers.
- Nurture your followers with genuine connection and engagement.
- Build a process that works for you (content creation should be easy(ish) and fun).
Write what feels good some of the time. Write what your audience needs the rest of the time.
Remember the first two rules: You’re here to solve problems and gift your followers an irresistible solution.
You can obsess about trends.
Lose sleep worrying about the algorithm.
Research for days on end if that floats your boat.
But every minute you spend thinking about how to grow on Medium is a minute you lose providing valuable solutions.
The kind of irresistible solutions newbies & seasoned Mediumites need to entice them away from The Gentlemen (Medium’s a tough nut to crack).
You’re here to serve your audience, so stop worrying about the things slowing down your primary purpose.
Move away from the remote. Go create compelling content that gifts your readers with a solution. Serve your fellow Mediumites who need you to help solve or overcome something as quickly as possible. Rinse & repeat.
