SCBWI PROMPT: STARRY NIGHT

Starry Starry Night

Don McLean’s tribute to Vincent van Gogh

When I looked at the prompt this morning, a voice in my head said, “starry, starry night,” and the music of Don Mclean came to mind.

Naturally, I headed on over to YouTube to find it, and as I listened, I realized the meaning behind the song. The visuals and lyrics helped. I had heard the song in the 70s, and even though it had a secondary title, Vincent, I didn’t know what the song was about. My ignorance at the time about Vincent van Gogh had something to do with it.

Anyhow, I thoroughly enjoyed it, as if for the first time. I hope you do too.

Starry Starry Night

Back then, I was just getting acclimated to western music, so when I liked a song, I’d try to find something by the same artist, and that’s how I bumped into this song. Don Mclean’s classic American Pie was all over the radio in those days. I am sure you’ve heard it. It’s a weird song if I ever heard one. Someone asked Don what it meant, and he replied, “It means I’ll never have to work another day in my life.”

American Pie.

I have thoroughly enjoyed participating in these daily prompts put out by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, SCBWI. Thanks, Amy Marley, for the invitation. There are two more days to go.

I am looking forward to the next two days for the climax and the conclusion of this month-long project, even though I joined about a week late.

As always, thank you for reading and responding.
