Spontaneous Me Time Might Help You Feel Good

Blissful wandering — Thank You Notes #30

Sometimes you need to stop doing what everyone wants and expects from you and do what you want to do. You need some unplanned, ‘cause-I-want-to’, me time.

I did that today. Oh. My. Goodness. You should have been with me. I did whatever came to my mind on the spur of the moment. It was a day of blissful wandering.

My plan was to take care of a few errands and then return home to work. After completing my errands, I wandered into a clothing store. I browsed through the latest fashions until a charcoal sweater dress startled me. It jumped off the rack and snuggled against my forearm. Since it wanted to go home with me, I felt compelled to buy it.

Then I decided to venture into Hobby Lobby (craft store) for five or ten minutes. What an uplifting experience! Christmas meets shoppers as they enter the store. The sounds, smells, and delightful decorations put you in a festive mood. People seem extra friendly too!

It’s not too early to start celebrating Christmas

Prior to Thanksgiving, you might not want to think about Christmas. I’ll admit, I thought someone should send the Hallmark Channel to time-out for running holiday movies in mid-October. After giving it a little thought, I realized a mental health reason for trees, garland, and Santa’s helpers to show up early this year.

Humans hunger for relief from the heaviness still hovering over the world. After enduring almost two years of a pandemic, you need an enormous dose of good cheer. Twinkling lights, parties, ugly sweaters, and carols might do the trick. I even welcome Mariah Carey’s overplayed Christmas song. Everyone is ready to celebrate. Why wait?

A few hours of me-time wandering can do wonders for you

I felt like an eighth-grader — ditching school and doing what I felt like doing. You should try it soon. It’s satisfying to place your cares on hold, and, without warning, enjoy a few hours.

A day of blissful wandering will make you feel good, free, and maybe festive. You deserve it.

Thank you, Trista Signe Ainsworth, for inspiring me to share the joy of a spontaneous “me time” day using this week’s prompt, blissful wanderings.
