Some Sure Know How to Bs About Their Writing Skillz
After a year in the biz, I’ve learned a thing or two and quite frankly, it’s embarrassing
I hear some full-time content writers go on and on about how they got jacked by their clients. So I thought why not write a piece on how I’ve seen some newbie and not-so-newbie content writers try to fleece their clients?
Part of the reason for this is writing is being pushed as a sexy side hustle.
Because of that everyone is a content writer these days.
And if you have AI to assist you then you think you are loaded for bear.
No, you’re not.
And how do I know?
Someone I know is starting a new business and was interviewing people to do work on their website — content writing and marketing, and so on.
Although I’m no expert, I do know a thing or two so I agreed to be a consultant. We began reviewing the responses to the ad they placed on a popular website for classified ads and I was surprised at some of them.
Many offer a one-stop service. Not just content writing but strategy, marketing campaign, user experience, and whatnot.
Kinda puts us folks here — who are still struggling to figure out what makes Algo tick😉 — to shame.
But is it as peachy as it sounds?
Uh, not exactly.
For example, one of the people who responded to the ad was not US based.
Yah, yah!
🎈How can you pitch a US-based client and claim to provide top-notch service when you yourself are struggling with the English language — in case you didn’t know, there are interviews where you are actually required to speak. (I’m a non-English speaker myself so don’t pick up your cudgels, just yet).
🎈And with all your cited experience, your social media links have little to no activity except for some unheard-of snake oil, excuse me, hair oil company you apparently provided content for.
Yah, yah!
You seem to have no clue about target audiences, the nuances of American speak, or real knowledge of SEO for that matter👇
🎈Guess they didn’t get the memo that social media marketing involves a little more than opening a LinkedIn or a Twitter account for the client.
Forget the right type of traction, good luck getting any type of traction without pouring in blood, sweat, and tears on a consistent basis.
But the client doesn’t really have to know all that now, do they?😉
Yah, yah!
🎈And if the customer is a small business, can you reach the target audience via social media alone? I’m still waiting for you to figure that one out…
If hired, chances are that this person will:
- Outsource the work to someone else — yes that is more common than you think.
- Use AI. According to the word on the street, it’s easy to use, efficient and will give you SEO-optimised stuff.
- Copy stuff from a bunch of other similar-sounding websites and wrap it up in a bow🎀
- Blow a lot of verbal wind aka hot air if they don’t know the answer to the question— dang but it is so obvious to someone like me who knows a thing or two about the biz that I feel embarrassed for you.
Well, who cares what I think if it gets the job done, right?
I mean, if the client really has no idea how content writing, strategizing, and promotions work, chances are they will merrily pay your fees.
Yah, yah!
