Snowfall in Darkness
March Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Movement”
Snowfall dances against the darkness — illuminated
I lost my keys.
It’s a cold night. I move back and forth along the sidewalk. Minutes pass before I find them — gray metal dusted in powdered snow.
In my car, I’m wracked with shivers. Melted snowflakes cling to my eyelashes. I peer outside.
In my search, I hadn’t noticed the surreal sight blossoming in the darkness. A winter pageant. A ghostly waltz.
Bare trees silhouette against parking lot lights. Like ghosts from a horror book.
Large snowflakes fall between skeletal branches. Reflecting pale light. They create movement in the stillness. Glimmering flecks.
While distant, I’m also enmeshed in the dance. Sinking into the music of the storm.
I take a photo — a poor replica. A motionless copy of a spirited show. The SUV’s engine growls under my command.
I leave.
