How Can Slippers Walk Down the Hall with No One In Them?
Our imaginations were working overtime that night
Staying at my son’s house to help out with the new baby on occasion was normal for me, but when my family forget I was sleeping over one time, it caused an evening of hair-raising mystery and chaos.
Light sleeper
During one of my weekend visits to my son’s house, which was a fairly regular occurrence, I heard the new baby stirring in her crib. My room was located in the corner of the hall, not far from hers. Being her door was open and I’m a light sleeper, I could hear her starting to wake up. That was my cue to walk to her room and check on her.
My son’s and daughter-in-law’s bedroom, equipped with a baby monitor, was located to the left of my room and down the hallway on a different wall, while my other two granddaughters’ bedrooms were situated across from them.
When I stayed over, they knew I would hear the baby, as I was accustomed to sleeping in an alert state since raising my kids.
On one of my visits, after I heard the baby stirring, I paused to listen in case her mother had woken up and tended to her. When I didn’t hear any other movement, I silently walked over to her room without turning on the lights to avoid disturbing anyone.
I tiptoed into her room, guided only by the dim light from her nightlight, and approached her crib, where she was sleeping peacefully. Recognizing she was likely just shifting positions, I quietly exited her room.
Slippers walking
As I was walking back towards my room, I saw two fuzzy objects about 25 feet away in the opposite direction, creeping slowly down the hallway.
They looked like slippers with no one in them.
Confused and unable to comprehend what I was seeing, I froze, and as the objects moved stealthily closer to me, I involuntarily let out a scream.
For a brief moment, it felt as if I were living in a horror movie.
Hearing me scream, my daughter-in-law, Paula, who was in the slippers, promptly reciprocated with a scream of her own, as she hadn’t seen me either.
Of course, slippers don’t walk by themselves! The slippers did have a person attached to them! Paula had also gotten up to check on the baby.
When she realized it was me, she asked in a surprised tone, “Why did you scream?”
I explained, “I heard the baby stirring, and then I saw slippers walking down the hallway, but I didn’t see you in them! Why were you walking like that?”
“I was trying to walk quietly. How could you think my slippers were moving on their own?”
“I couldn’t process what I was seeing fast enough. Why did you scream?” I queried back.
Paula quickly replied, “I screamed because you screamed. I forgot you were here!”
Shhhh!
In the meantime, my son had woken up and quietly emerged into the hallway without our awareness.
Suddenly, he spoke up in his deep, resonating voice, “What’s going on out here?”
Caught off guard, both Paula and I jumped out of our skins and let out involuntary shrieks of surprise.
My son, now understandably annoyed at our sudden outbursts, blurted, “What’s wrong with you two? Why are you standing in the hallway screaming? It’s the middle of the night!”
Paula wasted no time throwing me under the bus and laughingly said, “Your mother thought my slippers were walking by themselves!”
“Seriously, Mom! Get a grip!” He then returned to his bedroom, warning us not to wake the kids up.
Too late! Our commotion had already woken up the two older girls, who were now frightened and had come out into the hallway. We reassured them everything was alright and sent them back to their rooms.
For a few moments, Paula and I stood there, laughing at ourselves for overreacting.
We figured the nightlight on Paula’s side of the hall was just bright enough to reflect off her slippers but not enough to reveal a person inside them.
It’s amazing how the mind can play tricks on a person when they’re not fully awake.
Amazingly, through our whole little comedy act, the baby was the only one who remained blissfully asleep and unaware of how silly her mom and grandma had been.
